Cortland Defeated by Top Seed Brockport in SUNYAC Volleyball Semifinals

BROCKPORT, N.Y. – Brockport pulled away in the first two sets and rallied for a win in the third to sweep Cortland in the SUNYAC women's volleyball tournament semifinals at Brockport's Vlogianitis Gymnasium. The Golden Eagles won by set scores of 25-17, 25-17 and 25-20.

Cortland concludes the season with a 20-17 record. The Red Dragons were making their 31st SUNYAC semifinal appearance in the 32-year history of the tournament. Brockport (32-1), the tournament's top seed, will host second seed New Paltz in the finals Sunday at noon. New Paltz swept Oswego in Saturday's first semifinal match.

Junior Samantha Czeczotka (Elwood/John H. Glenn) and sophomore Courtney Silberer (Centereach) led Cortland with eight kills each. Czeczotka also totaled nine digs, and sophomore Nicole Silberer (Centereach) added six kills.

Also for the Red Dragons, junior Melanie McGuirk (Lido Beach/Kellenberg) led the team with 16 digs and three aces and junior Liz Roberts (Island Park/West Hempstead) had 30 assists and 10 digs.

Kayla Barber paced Brockport with 15 kills and Sam Holdredge finished with 10 kills. Noelle Poloncarz ended with 30 assists, 15 digs and three aces and Kathleen Irwin led the team with 19 digs.

The opening set was tied 7-7 before Brockport pushed ahead to a 17-11 lead and never looked back. The Golden Eagles made quick work of the second set with early leads of 13-4 and 23-13. Cortland did briefly fight back to within 23-17 before the hosts scored the final two points.

Cortland used a 7-1 run in the third set to turn a 7-6 deficit into a 13-8 lead. Brockport eventually clawed back to tie the set at 16-16, the teams were tied four more times through 20-20. The Golden Eagles, however, scored the sets final five points to finish the match.
