Five Winners Among Eight ECAC Qualifiers for Cortland Women at Utica Meet

Midge Moore won the 60-meter dash and finished third in the 200-meter dash, both with ECAC-qualifying times
UTICA, N.Y. – Cortland recorded eight ECAC qualifying performances, five in winning efforts, as the Red Dragons competed at Utica College's non-team scoring Jen and Todd Hutton Invitational. The meet was the first held at Utica's new on-campus Sports & Recreation Dome.

Kailyn Balzano (East Greenbush/Columbia) had two of those outings with wins in the 800 meters (2:20.54) and mile run (5:11.67). Midge Moore (Massapequa) won the 60-meter dash in an ECAC time of 8.00 seconds, Valerie Moise (Central Islip) was the 200-meter dash winner with an ECAC effort of 26.27 seconds, and Dana Kupiec (Salem) posted an ECAC time of 58.77 seconds to win the 400-meter dash.

Kupiec and Moore also qualified for ECACs in the 200-meter dash and Raheemah Madany (Bennington, VT/Mount Anthony Union) recorded an ECAC time in the 60-meter dash. Kupiec was second (26.31) and Moore third (26.40) in the 200 and Madany finished second (8.01) in the 60.

Christine LaVoie (Fayetteville/Fayetteville-Manlius) and Yasmeen Griffin (Liverpool) placed second (1:00.73) and third (1:03.04), respectively, in the 400-meter dash. Moise was third in the 60-meter dash (8.07) and Madany finished fourth in the 200-meter dash (26.76).

The Red Dragons took the top four spots in the mile. In addition to Balzano's victory, Kerri Culhane (Sayville) finished second (5:20.87), Jackie Boyce (Greenwich) was third (5:36.38) and Megan Dufort (Schenectady) placed fourth (5:43.37). Melissa Emilio (Oneonta) finished fourth in the 800 meters (2:26.92) and Kirstin Kaessinger (Miller Place) was fourth in the 60-meter hurdles (10.15, 10.10 in prelims). Angelique Jean-Charles (Elmont/Valley Stream) recorded a time of 9.72 seconds in the 60-meter hurdle prelims.

Kaessinger led Cortland's efforts in the field events with a second-place high jump of 1.55 meters (5' 1"). She was actually tied for the best height, but finished second officially due to number of misses at the highest successfully cleared height. Nicole Hofmann (Farmingdale) finished third in the high jump at 1.50 meters (4' 11").

Katie Ellsworth (Suffern) was runner-up in the long jump with a distance of 4.84 meters (15' 10.5"). Gabrielle Czerw (Holbrook/Sachem North) and Carla Auguste (Brooklyn/Midwood) were second and fourth, respectively, in the triple jump. Czerw covered 10.65 meters (34' 11.25") and Auguste went 10.23 meters (33' 6.75").

Diamond Jackson (Farmingville/Sachem East) placed third in the weight throw at 11.76 meters (38' 7") and fourth in the shot put at 10.25 meters (33' 7.5"), while Alex Seymour (Dryden) and Jackie Guzman (Ronkonkoma/Connetquot) were third and fourth, respectively, in the pole vault. Both cleared 3.05 meters (10' 0"), with number of misses determining their placements.

Cortland will be off for more than a month before competing January 22-23 at the Cornell Upstate Challenge.
