Cortland Men Second at Hamilton Invite; Burns and Callen Win Individual Titles

Reeve Callen won the 200-yard freestyle and swam legs on three winning relay teams
CLINTON, N.Y. – Dylan Burns (Cornwall) won the 100-yard backstroke and swam on four winning relays, and Reeve Callen (Oswego) earned a victory in the 200-yard freestyle and was part of three victorious relays to help Cortland place second of six schools at the Hamilton College Invitational Friday and Saturday.

Hamilton won the team title with 1,075.5 points, followed by Cortland (737), Oneonta (553.5), Oswego (527.5), Buffalo St. (416) and Potsdam (339.5).

Burns posted a winning time of 56.57 seconds in the 100-yard backstroke and Callen swam the 200-yard freestyle in 1:46.68. Burns, Jack Jakubek (Monroe/Monroe-Woodbury), Mathew Hasbrouck (New Paltz) and Callen won the 200-yard medley relay in 1:38.55. Burns, Brian Cremer (Blue Point/Bayport-Blue Point), Callen and Bailey Eigbrett (Avon) captured the 200-yard freestyle relay, while Burns, Jakubek, Hasbrouck and Tim Thatcher (Staten Island/St. Peter's Boys) won the 400-yard medley relay (3:41.14). Cremer, Burns, Thatcher and Callen were clocked in 3:15.53 to win the 400-yard freestyle relay.

Callen posted two individual runner-up showings in addition to his win. He was second in the 50-yard freestyle (21.80) and 100-yard freestyle (48.59). Jakubek finished second in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:01.75) and fourth in the 200-yard breaststroke (2:18.91), while Lee Wade (Holtsville/Sachem East) placed second in 3-meter diving (247.15 points) and fourth in 1-meter diving (232.45 points).

Burns finished third in the 50-yard freestyle (22.51) and Hasbrouck was fourth in both the 200-yard butterfly (2:06.85) and 100-yard butterfly (55.51). The combination of Cremer, Thatcher, Adam Kirchgessner (Irondequoit/West Irondequoit) and Callen finished second in the 800-yard freestyle relay (7:30.55).

Kirchgessner was also sixth in the 200-yard butterfly (2:09.57). Kaleil Balmir (Farmingdale) finished fifth in 1-meter diving (178.85) and sixth in 3-meter diving (123.00). Jakubek placed seventh in the 200-yard individual medley (2:13.01), Cremer was seventh in the 1,650-yard freestyle (18:49.56) and eighth in the 200-yard freestyle (1:53.14), and Thatcher turned in a seventh-place time in the 100-yard freestyle (50.60). In addition, Paddy Thompson (Middletown/Pine Bush) finished eighth in the 50-yard freestyle (23.57) and Esteban Rodriguez (Hartsdale/Woodlands) was eighth in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:05.41).

Cortland will be idle from competition for more than a month before hosting Hartwick College in a dual meet on Sunday, January 10 at 1 p.m.
