Cortland Women Earn Runner-up Finish at Eight-Team Hamilton Invitational

Chelsey Simon finished third in the 100-yard butterfly and fourth in the 200-yard butterfly among her three top-five finishes
CLINTON, N.Y. – Miranda Fergus (Millbrook) won both diving events, Elizabeth Connolly (Lockport) posted a pair of top-four individual finishes and Chelsey Simon (Oneida) registered three top-five showings to help Cortland place second out of eight schools at the two-day Hamilton College Invitational.

Hamilton won the team crown with 980 points. Cortland finished with 536 points, followed by Mt. Holyoke (505), Oneonta (499), Smith (498), Oswego (435), Buffalo State (197) and Potsdam (194).

Fergus recorded a score of 299.45 points to win 3-meter diving and 285.20 points to win on the 1-meter board. Connolly was third in the 200-yard freestyle (2:01.10) and fourth in the 500-yard freestyle (5:31.09). Simon placed third in the 100-yard butterfly (1:01.42), fourth in the 200-yard butterfly (2:16.49) and fifth in the 500-yard freestyle (5:33.28).

Amanda Grossman (Schaghticoke/Hoosic Valley) finished fifth in the 100-yard backstroke in 1:05.32. Natalie Johnson (Canandaigua/Marcus Whitman) was sixth in both the 100-yard backstroke (1:06.47) and the 100-yard butterfly (1:04.44).

Other individual highlights included Jackie Bors (Buffalo/North Tonawanda) finishing sixth in 3-meter diving (188.45 points), and seventh-place finishes by Emily McGurk (Monroe/Monroe-Woodbury) in the 200-yard individual medley (2:24.02) and Kelly Lambkin (Monroe/Monroe-Woodbury) in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:14.66).

Connolly, Simon and Grossman were part of three Cortland top-four relay finishes. They combined with Johnson for third place in the 400-yard freestyle relay (3:48.80), with McGurk for fourth in the 800-yard freestyle relay (8:26.55), and with Lambkin for fourth in the 400-yard medley relay (4:18.23). In the 400 medley, Grossman led off with the backstroke, followed by Lambkin with the breaststroke, Simon with the butterfly and Connolly with the freestyle leg.

Cortland will be idle from competition for more than a month before hosting Hartwick College in a dual meet on Sunday, January 10 at 1 p.m.
