BUFFALO, N.Y. - The Cortland women's swimming and diving team holds fourth place out of nine teams after day one of the SUNYAC Championships at Erie Community College in Buffalo. The Red Dragons have 142 points, trailing Geneseo (314), Brockport (156) and Fredonia (146).
The Red Dragons' top performers after the first full day of competition were junior
Miranda Fergus (Pleasant Valley/Millbrook) and senior
Krista Caputo (Staten Island/Curtis), who each recorded second-place finishes. Fergus earned a runner-up finish in three-meter diving on Wednesday with an 11-dive score of 463.75 points, while Caputo touched the wall second in the 500-yard freestyle in 5:10.43.
Junior
Chelsey Simon (Oneida) finished seventh in the 500 free (5:23.86). Junior
Katie Cornetta (Gardner, MA) led three Red Dragons who claimed three of the top-four spots in the "B" final of the 50-yard freestyle. Cornetta touched the wall first in 25.01, followed closely by
Amanda Grossman (Schaghticoke/Hoosic Valley) second in 25.14. Senior
Lauren Kaplowitz (Stamford, CT/Westhill) placed fourth in the "B" final in 25.25.
In the 200-yard individual medley, sophomore
Emily McGurk (Monroe/Monroe-Woodbury) placed second in the "B" final in 2:14.45. Sophomore
Angelica Ford (Chicago, IL/Elk Grove Village) touched the wall right behind McGurk in third place (2:14.93).
Cortland placed third in the 200-yard freestyle relay as the foursome of Cornetta, Grossman, Caputo and Kaplowitz teamed up to finish in 1:38.52. Grossman swam the opening leg, followed by junior
Chloe Freideman (Whitney Point), Simon and Cornetta in Cortland's sixth-place finish in the 400-yard medley relay.
