Four Red Dragons Place in "A" Finals During Day 2 of SUNYAC Championships

BUFFALO, N.Y. – Junior Miranda Fergus (Pleasant Valley/Millbrook) finished third in 1-meter diving to lead Cortland's performances during the second full day of competition at the 2015 SUNYAC Women's Swimming and Diving Championships.

The event is being held at the Burt Flickinger Center at Erie Community College. The championship will conclude Saturday.

Cortland is sixth in the team standings, with only 46 points separating the Red Dragons from the second-place team. Geneseo easily leads with 679 points, followed by Oneonta (322), Fredonia (318), Brockport (314), New Paltz (310) and Cortland (276) in the top six of the nine-team field.

Fergus posted an 11-dive score of 430.85 points on the 1-meter board. Junior Chelsey Simon (Oneida) finished sixth in the 100-yard butterfly (1:00.09, 1:00.01 in prelims) and sophomore Angelica Ford (Chicago, IL/Elk Grove Village) was seventh in the 400-yard individual medley (4:49.47, 4:48.40 in prelims).

Sophomore Amanda Grossman (Schaghticoke/Hoosic Valley) won the "B" final in the 100-yard backstroke (1:01.78) to finish ninth overall. Sophomore Emily McGurk (Monroe/Monroe-Woodbury) finished 11th in the 100-yard butterfly (1:00.45), senior Krista Caputo (Staten Island/Curtis) was 11th in the 200-yard freestyle (1:57.91) and junior Chloe Freideman (Whitney Point) placed 12th in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:10.42).

Also scoring individually for the Red Dragons were: senior Lauren Kaplowitz (Stamford, CT/Westhill) in 13th place in the 100-yard backstroke (1:04.48; 1:04.23 in prelims); sophomore Kelly Lambkin (Monroe/Monroe-Woodbury) in 14th place in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:11.36); junior Lexi Kiser (Vestal) in 15th place in the 400-yard individual medley (5:05.42; 5:03.49 in prelims); junior Katie Cornetta (Gardner, MA) in 16th place in the 100-yard butterfly (1:01.79; 1:01.66 in prelims); and freshman Jacqueline Lang (Middletown/Pine Bush) in 16th place in 1-meter diving (257.85 pts.; 270.15 pts. in prelims).

Cortland finished sixth in both relays. The 200-yard medley relay team of Grossman, Freideman, Simon and Kaplowitz was clocked in 1:50.82, while Caputo, Simon, Ford and McGurk finished the 800-yard freestyle relay in 8:04.19.
