CORTLAND, N.Y. – Senior
Lamard Herron (Westbury) scored 21 of his game-high 25 points in the first half as Cortland led wire-to-wire in a 71-59 victory over visiting Brockport.
The Red Dragons improved to 14-4 overall and are third in the SUNYAC with a 7-4 league mark, one game behind 8-3 co-leaders Oswego and Plattsburgh.
Herron made 9-of-16 shots from the floor, including 8-of-11 attempts in the first half. He hit 3-of-5 3-pointers and 4-of-6 free throws and added seven rebounds and three assists. Herron increased his collegiate career scoring total to 996 points, which includes 889 points in three seasons at Cortland along with 107 during the 2010-11 season at New Paltz.
Freshman
Justin Prendergast (Monroe/Monroe-Woodbury) finished with 12 points, nine in the second half, and shared team honors with seven rebounds. Junior
Blair Estarfaa (Buffalo/Maryvale) scored nine points on three 3-pointers and junior
Grequan Carter (Queens/Humanities & The Arts) chipped in with five points, six rebounds, four assists and three steals.
Brockport (9-9, 6-5 SUNYAC) was led by Daniel Aiello's 12 points. Matthew Smith finished with 11 points, three assists and three steals and Hamed Shamseldin scored 10 points.
Cortland shot 55 percent in the first half, including 6-of-7 from 3-point range, and finished at 46 percent overall and 53 percent (9-of-17) from the arc. Brockport shot 42 percent overall and 35 percent (6-of-17) from 3-point range.
Cortland led 26-21 with seven minutes left in the first half before going on a 17-2 run to take a 43-23 lead with 2:04 left. Herron scored 13 points with three 3-pointers during that streak. The Red Dragons took a 43-27 lead into halftime.
Brockport clawed back to within seven on a Mike Gallagher 3-pointer with eight minutes left, but Prendergast scored six points during an 8-0 stretch that put Cortland up 66-51 with 5:18 on the clock. The Red Dragons held at least a 12-point lead the remainder of the contest.
Cortland will travel to Buffalo State on Friday at 5:30 p.m. and Fredonia Saturday at 2 p.m. for a pair of SUNYAC games.
