Cortland Cruises to 88-53 Win at Fredonia

FREDONIA, N.Y. – Senior Lamard Herron (Westbury) scored 16 points and was one of 14 Cortland players to reach the scoring column as the Red Dragons cruised to an 88-53 SUNYAC victory at Fredonia.

The Red Dragons improved to 15-5 overall, and at 8-5 are right in the middle of a packed SUNYAC standings board. Plattsburgh and Oswego, which each lost Saturday, lead the league with 9-4 records. Buffalo State is 9-5, followed by Cortland and New Paltz each at 8-5, Geneseo at 7-5, Oneonta at 7-6 and Brockport at 6-6 as the top eight teams are separated by only two games.

Herron hit 6-of-12 shots, including 3-of-7 from 3-point range, and added four assists and three steals. Junior Blair Estarfaa (Buffalo/Maryvale) made 4-of-7 treys in a 14-point effort, senior Matt McGowan (Lake George) registered nine points and five rebounds and sophomore Terrence Felder (Mount Vernon) connected on 3-of-4 from 3-point range for nine points.

Also for the Red Dragons, freshman Carrel Joseph (Port-au-Prince, Haiti/Deer Park (NY)) scored eight points on 4-of-5 shooting and junior T.J Hefele (Greenlawn/Friends Academy) made two of his four 3-pointers and scored eight points. Cortland finished the game 13-of-29 from the 3-point arc (45 percent) and 50 percent overall from the field (32-of-64).

Ian Helps led Fredonia (2-18, 1-13 SUNYAC) with 22 points and 11 rebounds as the Blue Devils' lone double-figure scorer. Akil Spruill added nine points and four boards.

Cortland led 16-4 seven minutes into the game and led by double figures the rest of the way. The Red Dragons held a 39-20 halftime lead, led by Estarfaa's 11 points, and after scoring 14 seconds into the second half kept their lead in the 20's and 30's the remainder of the contest.

Cortland will host Oneonta on Tuesday, Feb. 10, at 5:30 p.m.
