Alex Spatzer won the 100-yard butterfly and swam on both of Cortland's winning relay teams
CORTLAND, N.Y. – Cortland won six individual events and both relays as the Red Dragons concluded the regular season with a 155-139 home dual-meet loss to Fredonia.
Cortland outscored the Blue Devils 139-123 in swimming events, but Fredonia gained 32 points in diving events as Cortland had no healthy divers available for the meet.
Senior
Mark Hanifin (Fort Plain) won the 200-yard freestyle in 1:46.10, nipping the runner-up by about four tenths of a second, and he captured the 500-yard freestyle in 4:58.33. Sophomore
Dylan Burns (Cornwall) won the 100-yard backstroke (54.32) and junior
Jack Jakubek (Monroe/Monroe-Woodbury) won the 100-yard breaststroke in 1:00.00, just under four tenths of a second better than the next finisher. Jakubek also finished second in the 200-yard breaststroke (2:18.64).
Senior
Luke Strothenke (New Paltz) took top honors in the 50-yard freestyle (22.82) and was second in the 100-yard freestyle (50.34). Senior
Alex Spatzer (Buffalo/Kenmore West) won the 100-yard butterfly (54.78) and finished second in the 200-yard butterfly (2:02.06). Senior
Brandon McManus (Pittsford/Pittsford Mendon) placed second in the 200-yard backstroke (2:09.11).
Cortland's 200-yard medley relay of Burns, Jakubek, Spatzer and Hanifin won in 1:36.77, while the 200-yard freestyle relay of freshman
Brian Cremer (Blue Point/Bayport-Blue Point), sophomore
Jamie Miller (Eden), Spatzer and Strothenke was victorious in 1:30.03.
Prior to the meet, Cortland recognized its four seniors – Hanifin, McManus, Spatzer and Strothenke.
Cortland will compete at the SUNYAC Championships Feb. 18-21 at Erie Community College's Flickinger Center in Buffalo.
