Shinn Breaks School 60-Meter Hurdles Record at Ramapo Indoor Select Meet

Joe Shinn broke the school record in the 60-meter hurdles with his prelim time of 8.18 seconds, then bettered that mark with a time of 8.14 seconds in the finals
NEW YORK CITY – Junior Joe Shinn (New Rochelle) set a school record in the 60-meter hurdles to help Cortland finish third out of 18 schools at the Ramapo College Indoor Select men's track and field meet. The competition was held at the New Balance Track & Field Center at the Armory in Manhattan.

Division II Texas A&M-Kingsville finished first with 109 points, followed by Ramapo (79), Cortland (59.5) and Division II Lincoln (Pa.) (56) in the top four.

Shinn broke the previous 60-meter hurdle school record of 8.24 seconds, set by Joe Kelleher in 2008, with his prelim time of 8.18 seconds. He improved on the record in the finals with his second-place time of 8.14 seconds and now ranks third nationally in Div. III in the event.

Shinn's performance was one of eight ECAC-qualifying efforts by the Red Dragons at the meet. Three of those came in the 60-meter hurdles as Shinn was joined in the finals of the 25-competitor event by senior Nick Avossa (Kingston) and sophomore Connor Christopherson (Morrisonville/Saranac). Avossa finished sixth in 8.47 seconds (8.42 in prelims) and Christopherson was eighth in 8.60 seconds (8.52 in prelims).

Senior Jarred Iacovelli (Manahawkin, NJ/Southern Regional) won the 3,000-meter run with an ECAC time of 8:40.17. Senior Melique Garcia (Watervliet) was third of 38 in the 60-meter dash in 6.93 seconds and junior Jerel Williams (East Islip) was fourth of 38 in the 400-meter dash in 49.36 seconds, both ECAC qualifiers. Also hitting ECAC marks were sophomore Nick Vachon (Endwell/Maine-Endwell) in the high jump (sixth place, 1.93 meters – 6' 4") and the 4x400-meter relay team of junior Keewan Rondinello (Liverpool), freshman Richard Taylor (Westbury), junior Romain Saint Germain (Westbury) and Williams with their second-place time of 3:23.06.

Cortland took the top three spots in the 3,000 meters as Iacovelli was followed across the finish line by sophomore Mitch Ryan (Plattsburgh/Seton Catholic) in second (8:46.70) and senior Nick Marcantonio (Glens Falls) in third (8:47.13). Sophomore Bailey Imbo (Bayport/Bayport-Blue Point) finished seventh of 28 in the 800 meters (1:56.76).

Christopherson, in addition to his hurdles finish, placed 10th of 25 in the long jump (6.40 meters – 21' 0") and 18th in the 400 meters (51.99). Junior Marcus Alston (Wappingers Falls/Roy C. Ketcham) placed 11th in the 60-meter dash (7.18), Taylor was 14th in the 400 meters (51.82) and Saint Germain finished 15th of 38 in the 200-mete dash (23.18).

Cortland will send competitors to the Boston University Valentine Invitational next Friday-Saturday, Feb. 13-14, and the Cornell Sunday Invitational on Feb. 15.
