Caputo and Simon Double Winners During Dual Loss to Fredonia

Chelsey Simon won the 100-yard and 200-yard butterfly races
CORTLAND, N.Y. – Junior Chelsey Simon (Oneida) and senior Krista Caputo (Staten Island/Curtis) each won two events as Cortland closed out its regular-season schedule with a 165.5-133.5 dual-meet loss to visiting Fredonia.

Simon won the 200-yard butterfly in 2:15.13 and the 100-yard butterfly in 1:01.38. Caputo captured the 1,000-yard freestyle in 11:06.21 and the 500-yard freestyle in 5:28.06. Caputo nearly won three events, but was second in the 200-yard freestyle (2:00.11) after being out-touched at the wall by five hundredths of a second. Simon placed second in the 1,000-yard freestyle (11:28.05).

Sophomore Angelica Ford (Chicago, IL/Elk Grove Village) finished in a dead heat for first in the 200-yard backstroke, along with Fredonia's Steph Rosa, in 2:17.22. Ford was runner-up in both the 100-yard backstroke (1:03.85), losing by less than four tenths of a second, and the 200-yard individual medley (2:22.94).

Junior Miranda Fergus (Pleasant Valley/Millbrook) won 1-meter diving with a score of 277.35 points and was second in 3-meter diving with 280.70 points.

Junior Chloe Freideman (Whitney Point) finished second in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:13.22) and junior Erin Smith (Bethpage) was second in the 50-yard freestyle (26.23). Cortland placed second in both relays. Sophomore Amanda Grossman (Schaghticoke/Hoosic Valley), Freideman, Simon and senior Lauren Kaplowitz (Stamford, CT/Westhill) were clocked at 1:55.88 in the 200-yard medley relay, while sophomore EmilyMcGurk (Monroe/Monroe-Woodbury), Kaplowitz, junior Katie Cornetta (Gardner, MA) and Grossman finished the 200-yard freestyle relay in 1:44.23.

Prior to the meet, Cortland recognized its three seniors – Caputo, Kaplowitz and Kara Mance (Poughkeepsie/Arlington).

Cortland will compete at the SUNYAC Championships Feb. 18-21 at Erie Community College's Flickinger Center in Buffalo.
