Great Depth for Red Dragon Women at Ithaca Invitational

ITHACA, N.Y. – Cortland athletes turned in numerous high-placing finishes at the non-team scoring Ithaca College Invitational women's indoor track and field meet.

Freshman Brenda Perrella (Hamburg) led the way for the Red Dragons with an ECAC-qualifying effort of 11.69 meters (38' 4.25") in the shot put. She finished third out of 19 competitors. Perrella also finished ninth in the weight throw at 12.51 meters (41' 0.5").

Junior Alex Seymour (Dryden) won the pole vault at 3.20 meters (10' 6") and was one of three Red Dragons in the top five of the event. Junior Mackenzie Meehan (Amsterdam) finished second at 3.05 meters (10' 0") and sophomore Nicole Piccinich (Emerson, NJ) was fifth (2.90 meters – 9' 6.25").

Freshman Stephanie Carrier (Burnt Hills/Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake) finished second in the mile (5:39.76) and 12th in the 800 meters (2:38.43). Freshman Megan Wagner (Niskayuna) placed fifth in the mile (5:42.33) and 10th in the 800 meters (2:37.81).

Freshman Nicole Hoffman (Farmingdale) and freshman Gabby Czerw (Holbrook/Sachem North) each cleared 1.45 meters (4' 9") in the high jump. Hoffman tied for second and Czerw was fifth due to number of misses. Czerw was also fourth in the triple jump (10.28 meters – 33' 8.75") and 13th in the long jump (4.58 meters – 15' 0.5"), while Hoffman finished fourth in the long jump (5.08 meters – 16' 8").

Junior Carla Auguste (Brooklyn/Midwood) was Cortland's top triple jumper with a third-place effort of 10.29 meters (33' 9.25"). Junior Brianna Callahan (Conklin/Susquehanna Valley) finished fifth at 10.25 meters (33' 7.5").

Three Red Dragons placed in the top seven out of 24 in the 400-meter dash. Sophomore Christine LaVoie (Fayetteville/Fayetteville-Manlius) was third in 1:01.12, followed by junior Yuka Tamura (Niigata, Japan/Nagaoka) in sixth (1:03.27) and freshman Carolyn Wagner (Delmar/Bethlehem) in seventh (1:03.31). LaVoie also finished 13th of 49 in the 200-meter dash (28.00), with freshman Tasha Almonacy (Brentwood) 17th (28.38).

Senior Valerie Vancol (Merrick/Sanford H. Calhoun) finished fifth in the shot put (11.35 meters – 37' 3") and sophomore Diamond Jackson (Farmingville/Sachem East) was fifth of 20 in the weight throw (13.58 meters – 44' 6.75").

Freshman Katie Ellsworth (Suffern) finished sixth in the long jump (4.90 meters – 16' 1") and 10th in the 60-meter hurdles (10.35). Freshman Jackie Guzman (Ronkonkoma/Connetquot) was 11th in the long jump (4.63 meters – 15' 2.25") and freshman Ebonie Lewis (Holtsville/Sachem East) finished 12th in the long jump (4.62 meters – 15' 2") and 11th in the 60-meter dash (8.44).

Five Red Dragons populated the top half of the standings in the 19-competitor 3,000-meter run. Junior Abbey Gray (Homer) finished fifth (11:38.18), freshman Sara Billings (Gansevoort/South Glens Falls) was sixth (11:44.41), freshman Hannah Graham (Wellsville) placed seventh (11:45.10), junior Jackie Boyce (Greenwich) was eighth (11:45.57) and freshman Jenny Messina (Queensbury) finished ninth (11:47.84).

Also for the Red Dragons, freshman Summer Haight (Jamestown) finished fifth of 20 in the 60-meter hurdles (9.69), with sophomore Sarah Shellard (Victor) seventh (9.89, 9.73 in prelims), while freshman Kenia Ozoria (Union City, NJ) finished 12th in the 60-meter dash (8.53).

Cortland will send competitors to the Boston University Valentine Invitational next Friday-Saturday, Feb. 13-14, and the Cornell Sunday Invitational on Feb. 15.
