Melique Garcia (Watervliet) qualified for the finals in the 200-meter dash during the opening day of competition at the 2015 NCAA Div. III Men's Indoor Track and Field Championshps. The two-day event is being hosted by Roanoke College at the JDL Fast Track in Winston-Salem.
Shinn finished third in his heat and had the fourth-best time overall in the 60-meter hurdle preliminaries with his time of 8.07 seconds. He will be one of eight hurdlers who will compete in the finals Saturday at 2:15 p.m., and placing in the top eight will earn him All-America honors.
Garcia finished second of 15 in the 200-meter dash preliminaries in 21.97 seconds. The only person faster in prelims was Texas-Tyler's Kevonte Shaw in 21.94 seconds. With a top-eight finish Saturday at 4:15 p.m., Garcia will earn All-America honors in the event for the second straight season. He finished fourth last winter.
For the second straight year, Garcia missed advancing to the 60-meter dash finals by the narrowest of margins. Last year he missed the eighth and final qualifying spot by four thousandths of a second. This year, Garcia was one of four sprinters between eighth and 11th place with times of 6.92 seconds. When thousandths of a second were applied, Garcia finished 11th in 6.920 seconds, with eighth place in 6.912 seconds, ninth in 6.915 seconds and 10th in 6.918 seconds.
Also on Friday, senior Andre Green (Watertown/Indian River) finished 12th of 15 in the long jump finals. His best distance was 6.72 meters (22' 0.75"), less than five inches from a top-eight showing. Dominique Neloms of Wisconsin-La Crosse won the title with a leap of 7.37 meters (24' 2.25").Results PageVideo - Day 2Â
