WINTER HAVEN, FLA. – Cortland split two contests at the Rebel Spring Games, picking up its first win of the season with a 4-1 triumph over Messiah College before falling to Farmingdale State, 6-4.
The Red Dragons (1-5) will face Eastern Connecticut State at 10 a.m. and Skidmore at 12:15 p.m. Tuesday in Winter Haven.
Cortland 4, Messiah 1 (Box Score) Alexandrea Flint (Dalton/Keshequa) threw a complete-game four-hitter for the victory. She allowed one run and one walk and struck out one. She outdueled Messiah's Carrie Fix, who also allowed only four hits in seven innings but gave up four runs and three walks with four strikeouts.
Cortland manufactured a run without a hit to take a 1-0 lead in the third.
Rosie Phillips (Geneva/Our Lady of Mercy) drew a one-out walk, went to second on a groundout, and scored after a pair of wild pitches.
The Red Dragons added three runs in the sixth.
Jamie Bucci (Tarrytown/Sleepy Hollow) walked,
Niki Barbato (East Meadow/Holy Trinity) singled and
Erin Wolstenholme (Oneonta) hit an RBI single down the left field line. Barbato scored on a wild pitch, and
Devynn Wilder (Oswego) drove in Wolstenholme with a sacrifice fly.
Messiah (2-4) got on the board in the bottom of the sixth. Amanda Jones, who finished 2-for-3, hit a one-out triple to right center and scored on a Courtney Allen groundout. Flint allowed a single to the next batter, but retired the last four hitters she faced.
Farmingdale St. 6, Cortland 4 (Box Score)Cortland led 4-0 after two innings before the Rams (5-5) scored the game's final six runs. Three of the six runs were unearned as the Red Dragons committed five errors.
Cortland's four-run second inning started with an
Andrea Schoonmaker (Poughkeepsie/Marlboro) double and a
Carrie Stoddard (Liverpool) RBI single. Phillips bunted and reached on an error and Bucci drove in a run with an infield single.
Diane Cork (Wayland/Wayland-Cohocton) then hit a grounder to third and Phillips was safe on the throw home. When the ball got away slightly from the catcher, Bucci kept running and was able to score as well.
Farmingdale picked up two runs in the third on a Michelle Mongiello two-run single and added a run in the fourth when Marissa Monaco led off with a double and eventually scored from third on a two-out Kerri Ossenfort RBI single.
The Rams took the lead with three runs in the fifth. The inning featured a Mongiello two-run double and a Lori Michalowski RBI grounder, as well as two Cortland errors.
Cortland put two runners on in the seventh on a Cork leadoff single and a
Courtney Kadish (East Amherst/Williamsville North) one-out walk, but two pop-ups ended the contest.
Taylor Webb relieved Farmingdale starter Taylor Tedeschi in the third inning and allowed only two hits and no runs over five frames for the win. She walked two and struck out one.
Jamie Lachall (Philadelphia, PA/Sun Valley) started for Cortland and allowed all six runs, three earned, on six hits in four innings. She struck out two with no walks.
Sarah Salamone (Liverpool/Cicero-North Syracuse) finished with three scoreless innings of relief. She gave up only one hit and one walk and fanned one.
Mongiello went 2-for-4 with four RBI and Ossenfort finished 2-for-2 for Farmingdale. Cortland was led offensively by Stoddard's 2-for-3 performance and Cork going 2-for-4, each with an RBI. Bucci was 1-for-2 with two walks and an RBI.
