WINTER HAVEN, FLA. –
Carrie Stoddard (Liverpool) tied the game with a two-run single in the sixth and
Devynn Wilder (Oswego) tripled in what proved to be the winning run in the top of the eighth as Cortland edged Springfield, 3-2 in eight innings, at the Rebel Spring Games. The Red Dragons (6-6) concluded their Florida trip with a 10-2 win over St. Norbert after breaking open a tight game with seven runs to end the game in the sixth inning.
Cortland went 6-4 in Florida, including wins in five of its last six games. The Red Dragons are scheduled to return to action on Tuesday, March 24, at Nazareth in a 3 p.m. doubleheader.
Cortland 3, Springfield 2 (8 inn.) (Box Score) Springfield took a 1-0 lead with an unearned run in the bottom of the first and added a run in the second on Elizabeth Joseph's RBI single.
The Red Dragons finally broke through in the sixth. They put runners on second and third with a single, fielder's choice, error and groundout, and Stoddard came through with a two-run single that knotted the game.
With the game tied after seven inning, the NCAA tiebreaker rule was put into effect starting in the top of the eighth. Cortland started with a runner on second base, but on a grounder to second Springfield was able to throw out the runner trying to go back to the base. Wilder, however, tripled to right field to plate the go-ahead run.
Springfield was able to escape further damage, and the Pride started the bottom of the eighth with a runner on second. The runner tried to advance to third on a pitch in the dirt, but Wilder threw her out for the first out. Springfield got a single with two outs before a groundout ended the game.
Jamie Lachall (Philadelphia, PA/Sun Valley) entered in relief in the sixth and allowed only one hit and one walk with one strikeout in three scoreless frames for the win.
Katie Pitkin (Brownville/General Brown), who came in during the second inning, kept the Red Dragons in striking distance by giving up only two hits, one walk and no runs over three and two thirds innings. She struck out three.
Camdyn Morgillo went the distance for Springfield (1-8). She allowed 10 hits and a walk and three runs, one earned, in eight innings.
Diane Cork (Wayland/Wayland-Cohocton) finished 2-for-2 with a walk and a sacrifice and
Rosie Phillips (Geneva/Our Lady of Mercy) was 2-for-3 for the Red Dragons.
Jamie Bucci (Tarrytown/Sleepy Hollow) finished 2-for-4. Mackenzie Navarro went 3-for-4 to account for half of Springfield's six hits.
Cortland 10, St. Norbert 2 (6 inn.) (Box Score) Cortland was nursing a 3-2 lead entering the bottom of the sixth before exploding for seven runs to end the game on the eight-run rule.
The Red Dragons loaded the bases to open the inning on singles by
Andrea Schoonmaker (Poughkeepsie/Marlboro),
Kaleigh Churchill (Camillus/West Genesee) and Phillips. Bucci then hit a ball to second, and an error on the play allowed Schoonmaker to score. Cork,
Makaylee Dowd (Saratoga Springs) and
Erin Wolstenholme (Oneonta) followed with consecutive RBI singles to give Cortland a 7-2 lead.
Stephanie Tirone (Amherst/Williamsville South) earned an RBI on a grounder to third, and reached on an error during the play, to push the lead to 8-2. Cortland ended the game on consecutive sac flies by Stoddard and pinch hitter
Jamie Corradina (Dobbs Ferry).
Alexandrea Flint (Dalton/Keshequa) started for Cortland and allowed three hit and a walk with two strikeouts in three innings.
Kirstyn Alonzo (Mechanicville) gave up two runs on two hits in two and two thirds innings. She walked one and fanned two. Lachall entered in the sixth with Cortland up 3-2 and escaped further trouble. Since Flint did not pitch the four innings required for the win, Lachall was deemed the most effective reliever and earned her second win of the day.
Cortland took a 3-0 lead in the second on a Phillips RBI single and pinch-hitter Shade's two-run single. St. Norbert scored in the sixth on a Jessica DeMeuse RBI double and a MacKenzie Hazen RBI single.
Phillips finished 2-for-2 with a walk and RBI. Schoonmaker and Bucci each went 2-for-3, with Schoonmaker driving in a run, and Wolstenholme was 2-for-4. DeMeuse and Taylor Long each finished 2-for-3 for St. Norbert (4-5).
