Cortland Ties for 2nd at ECAC Championships; Red Dragons Break School 4x200 Record

NEW YORK CITY – The Cortland men's indoor track and field team tied for second place out of 56 schools that scored points at the 2015 Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Div. III Championships. The two-day event was held at The New Balance Track & Field Center at The Armory in Manhattan.

Amherst won the team title with 42 points, edging out both Cortland and Brockport with 41.5 points apiece. Salisbury (38) and 2014 champion Bates (37) rounded out the top five.

The combination of junior Jerel Williams (East Islip), junior Marcus Alston (Wappingers Falls/Roy C. Ketcham), junior Romain Saint Germain (Westbury) and senior Melique Garcia (Watervliet) set a school record in the 4x200-meter relay with a winning time of 1:28.35. The previous school record of 1:29.72 was set in 2011 by current assistant coach Eric Banks along with Zac Farnham-Haskell, Stephan Linton and Gino Bisceglia.

Garcia finished second in the 60-meter dash in 6.88 seconds and Williams was third in the 400-meter dash in 49.27 seconds. Sophomore Connor Christopherson (Morrisonville/Saranac) placed second in the heptathlon with 4,680 points. His top scoring events were the 60-meter hurdles (8.65 seconds, 825 points), the 60-meter dash (7.37 seconds, 755 points), the 1,000-meter run (2:55.32, 711 points) and the high jump (1.86 meters/6' 1.25", 679 points).

Other Red Dragons to earn All-ECAC honors with top-eight scoring finishes included: senior Connor Ten Eyck (Clifton Park/Shenendehowa) in the pole vault (fifth place, 4.67 meters – 15' 3.75"); senior Andre Green (Watertown/Indian River) in the long jump (sixth place, 6.86 meters – 22' 6.25"); senior Nick Avossa (Kingston) in the 60-meter hurdles (seventh place, 8.41; 8.34 in prelims); and freshman Charlie Kollmer (Mount Sinai) in the pole vault (tied for eighth place, 4.52 meters – 14' 10").

In addition to the ECAC meet, Cortland sent a few competitors to the St. Lawrence Fast Chance Meet on Friday. Senior Nick Marcantonio (Glens Falls) won the 3,000 meters in 8:32.96, followed by senior Jarred Iacovelli (Manahawkin, NJ/Southern Regional) in second (8:39.99) and sophomore Mitch Ryan (Plattsburgh/Seton Catholic) in fourth (8:55.72). Sophomore Nick Vachon (Endwell/Maine-Endwell) cleared 1.96 meters (6' 5") as the lone competitor in the high jump.

Cortland will await the announcement of participants for next weekend's NCAA Div. III Championships, which will be held at JDL Fast Track in Winston-Salem, N.C. The final participant list will be posted on NCAA.com Monday by 9 a.m. The top 15 men in each individual event and the top 12 in each relay (4x400 and DMR) qualify for nationals. As of Saturday night, Garcia ranks third in the 200-meter dash (22.02) and fourth in the 60-meter dash (6.86), Green is fourth in the long jump (7.23 meters – 23' 8.75"), and junior Joe Shinn (New Rochelle) ranks fifth in the 60-meter hurdles (8.05).
