CORTLAND, N.Y. – SUNY Cortland's
Julie Lenhart became the eighth softball head coach in Div. III history to win 800 games as Cortland swept Buffalo State, 6-5 and 12-9, Saturday afternoon at Dragon Field.
Lenhart is the third Div. III coach to reach the 800-win plateau this season. Montclair's Anita Kubicka won her 800th early this season and St. Thomas' John Tschida won his 800th game on April 8. Lenhart is 800-339-2 in 26 years of collegiate coaching with a 680-262-2 mark in 21 years at Cortland and a 120-77 record from 1990-94 at Wisconsin-Platteville.
The Red Dragons improved to 15-7 overall and 5-1 in the SUNYAC with their seventh straight win and 11th in the last 12 games. Buffalo State is 9-10 and 4-4. Cortland will host Fredonia Sunday at noon in a SUNYAC doubleheader rescheduled from Friday.

Cortland opened up the scoring in the second inning when senior
Devynn Wilder (Oswego) scored on a muffed throw. The Red Dragons scored again in the third on a solo home run from sophomore
Niki Barbato (East Meadow/Holy Trinity).
Buffalo St. evened the score with two runs in the fourth on RBI singles by Kara Stein and Danielle Szymkowiak. Cortland regained the lead with four runs in the bottom of the inning. Junior
Jamie Bucci (Tarrytown/Sleepy Hollow) singled down the right field line to drive in a run and classmate
Diane Cork (Wayland/Wayland-Cohocton) hit a three-run homer to extend Cortland's lead to 6-2.
The Bengals scored three in the fifth on a two-run blast by Stephanie Novo and an RBI single by Szymkowiak. Buffalo St. was threatening with the bases loaded and two outs in the inning, but sophomore
Jamie Lachall (Philadelphia, PA/Sun Valley) was able to get a batter to ground out and avoid any further danger. Lachall pitched the rest of the way and kept the Bengals scoreless in the final two innings for the save. She allowed two hits, walked one and struck out one.
Senior
Sarah Salamone (Liverpool/Cicero-North Syracuse) started for Cortland before giving way to freshman
Katie Pitkin (Brownville/General Brown), who earned her second win of the season as she was the pitcher of record when Cortland took the lead for good in the bottom of the fourth.
Maddie Coneys pitched three and two-thirds for the Bengals and surrendered six runs (five earned) and Alison Novak pitched the remaining two and a third without allowing a run.
Bucci went 4-for-4 with an RBI and run scored for Cortland. Cork finished 1-for-3 with a walk, homer and three RBI. Novo was 3-for-4 with a homer and two RBI, Szymkowiak finished 2-for-4 with two RBI and Sarah Gorski was 2-for-4 with two runs for Buffalo St.
Game 2: Cortland 12, Buffalo State 9 (Box Score)
Cortland grabbed an early 2-0 lead in the third on a wild pitch and a
Carrie Stoddard (Liverpool) RBI double. The teams then combined for 13 runs in a wild fourth inning.
Buffalo St. scored six times on a Stein RBI groundout, a Jean Stahl two-run double and a Novo three-run homer. Cortland answered with seven unearned runs in the bottom of the inning. Two Buffalo St. errors opened the door, and Cortland took advantage with a Barbato RBI double, RBI singles from senior
Erin Wolstenholme (Oneonta) and sophomore
Mikayla Shade (Bethlehem), and a three-run, pinch-hit homer from sophomore
Kaleigh Churchill (Camillus/West Genesee). Another run scored earlier in the inning on a throwing error after Wolstenholme's hit.
The Red Dragons added three in the sixth to take a 12-6 lead. Churchill had an RBI single and Stoddard and Churchill both scored due to errors. The Bengals made things interesting with three runs in the seventh on a Novo RBI double and Melissa Magiera pinch-hit, two-run homer. Lachall was able to earn her second save of the day and the season after the final batter fouled out. Lachall allowed three runs in three innings. She gave up nine hits and one walk and struck out one.
Sophomore
Alexandrea Flint (Dalton/Keshequa) started in the circle for Cortland. She pitched three and a third innings before giving way to freshman
Kirstyn Alonzo (Mechanicville), who recorded her third win of the season after finishing the fourth. Alonzo was the pitcher of record when Cortland took the lead for good in the bottom of the fourth.
Alexis Haley made the start for Buffalo St. and gave up nine runs (two earned) in three and two thirds innings. Jordan Sarat finished off the game for Buffalo St. and allowed three runs (one earned).
Buffalo State finished with 16 hits, led by Joanna Bardak going 4-for-5 and Haley finishing 3-for-4. Novo was 2-for-5 with a homer, four RBI and two runs and Taylor Swiatek finished 2-for-3.
For Cortland, which ended with 13 hits, Churchill was 2-for-2 with four RBI and two runs. Barbato, Shade and Stoddard each went 2-for-4 with an RBI.
