Cortland Takes One of Two vs. Defending SUNYAC Champ Oneonta

CORTLAND, N.Y. – Sophomore Mikayla Shade (Bethlehem) went 2-for-3 with a three-run homer and a double as Cortland defeated Oneonta, 6-4, to earn a split of a doubleheader against the visiting Red Dragons. Oneonta, the defending SUNYAC champion, won the opener, 2-1, on a Brianna Rivera sacrifice fly in the top of the sixth.

Cortland is now 17-8 overall and is tied for first, with Fredonia, in the SUNYAC with an 8-2 record. Oneonta is 17-7 overall and 6-2 in the conference.

Cortland will host St. John Fisher in a non-league doubleheader Wednesday at 3 p.m.

Game 1: Oneonta 2, Cortland 1 (Box Score)

The opener featured a pitcher's duel between Oneonta's Sabrina DeAngelis and Cortland's Sarah Salamone. DeAngelis allowed four hits, two walks and one run with five strikeouts and Salamone gave up two runs on six hits with no walks or strikeouts, both in compete-game efforts.

Oneonta's go-ahead rally in the sixth started with a Nicole Marzillo leadoff single through the right side. She moved to second on a Traci Lichtenstein sac bunt and hustled to third on a wild pitch. Rivera hit a fly ball to right to bring home the run.

The guests grabbed a 1-0 lead in the second. Marlene Cuevas singled with one out, took second on a groundout and scored on Jenn Brocco's RBI double to left center. Cortland tied the game in the third. Devynn Wilder (Oswego) was hit by a pitch and advanced to second on a Rosie Phillips (Geneva/Our Lady of Mercy) sacrifice. With two outs, Diane Cork (Wayland/Wayland-Cohocton) walked and Niki Barbato (East Meadow/Holy Trinity) hit an RBI single through the left side.

Cortland's defense kept the game tied in the fourth. Rivera opened the inning by reaching on catcher's interference. Cuevas then lined a double to left center, but Cortland threw out Cuevas at home on a relay from Cork to shortstop Erin Wolstenholme (Oneonta) to Wilder. The Red Dragons, however, managed to get only one runner in scoring position over the final four innings on a two-out Kaleigh Churchill (Camillus/West Genesee) double in the fourth.

Brocco finished 2-for-3 with a double and RBI for Oneonta and Shade was 2-for-3 for Cortland. Barbato ended 1-for-2 with a walk and RBI. DeAngelis improved to 10-3 with the win and Salamone is now 4-2.

Game 2: Cortland 6, Oneonta 4 (Box Score)

Oneonta rallied from a 4-0 first-inning deficit to eventually tie the game in the fifth, but Cortland scored unearned runs in the fifth and sixth innings to post the victory.

Cortland opened the bottom of the first with a Jamie Bucci (Tarrytown/Sleepy Hollow) single to left and a Cork bunt single. Barbato then hit a grounder to second to drive in a run, and she was safe on the play when the first baseman dropped the throw. Shade followed with a three-run, opposite-field homer to left center and the hosts led 4-0.

Oneonta scratched back with a run in the third with an Ashley Lefebvre two-out double and a Marzillo RBI single and a run in the fourth on singles by Rivera and Cuevas and a Katie O'Gorman sac fly.

The guests tied the game in the fifth with the help of two Cortland errors. Lichtenstein doubled with one out, but pinch runner Kristyn Neroda was nearly picked off after a lineout to second that would have ended the inning. Instead, the throw sailed into the outfield to allow her to go to third. Following a walk, O'Gorman drove in a run with an infield single, and the tying run scored later on a wild pitch. Cortland escaped further damage with a groundout with runners on second and third.

In the bottom of the fifth, Barbato led off with a single. Following two outs on fielder's choices, Alicia Flanagan (Penfield) stole second. Churchill hit a fly ball that appeared to end the inning, but the center fielder dropped the ball at the last second and Flanagan scored the go-ahead run. In the sixth, Wilder reached on an error and Phillips bunted for a single. Bucci bunted the runners to second and third and Cork drove in Wilder with a grounder to short.

Jamie Lachall (Philadelphia, PA/Sun Valley) earned the win in relief of starter Alexandrea Flint (Dalton/Keshequa). Lachall gave up two runs, one earned, in three and two thirds innings. She allowed five hits and two walks, one intentional, and struck out one. Flint allowed five hits, a walk and two runs over the first three and a third innings with one strikeout.

Oneonta started Rachel Hitt was pulled after Cortland's first four batters. Brocco went the rest of the way and gave up five hits and two unearned runs in six innings. She struck out two and walked one.

Shade finished 2-for-3 with three RBI and was 4-for-6 in the doubleheader. Lichtenstein went 3-for-4 for Oneonta.
