Cortland Blanks Oneonta, 13-0, to Open Three-Game SUNYAC Weekend Series

CORTLAND, N.Y. - Alex Weingarten (East Rockaway/Lynbrook) allowed two hits and a walk over six scoreless innings as nationally top-ranked Cortland shut out Oneonta, 13-0, in the opening game of a three-game SUNYAC series at Wallace Field.

Cortland (25-2, 10-1 SUNYAC) will host Oneonta in a doubleheader Saturday at noon. Prior to the games, at approximately 11:40 a.m., the team will honor long-time Red Dragon coach Bob Wallace, who passed away last December at age 87. A military recognition ceremony will be held to remember Wallace, who was a Navy veteran. Wallace coached the Red Dragons from 1958-82, and Cortland's field was named for him in 1996.

Weingarten, now 5-1, teamed with Turner Parry (Camillus/West Genesee) and Jason Martin (Turin/South Lewis) for the two-hit shutout. Parry gave up one walk and struck out two over the seventh and eighth innings and Martin retired the side in order with two strikeouts in the ninth.

Cortland's 16-hit attack was led by Austin Clock (Niskayuna), who went 3-for-4 with a double and three RBI, and Conrad Ziemendorf (Penfield/Webster Schroeder), who was 2-for-4 with a homer, double, two RBI and two runs.

Anthony Simon (Suffern/Don Bosco Prep (NJ)) ended 2-for-3 with two RBI and Donny Castaldo (Mount Kisco/Fox Lane) hit a solo homer.

Nicholas Ponesse started for Oneonta (6-16, 3-8 SUNYAC). He allowed 11  hits and one walk and hit five batters in five and two thirds innings. He was charged with 12 runs, eight earned. Oneonta's lone hits were a Casy Kies two-out single in the first and a Dillon Merola one-out single in the third. The lone Oneonta player to reach second came with two outs in the eighth when Domenick Desiderio was hit by a pitch and Sean Mullins walked.

Ziemendorf homered with one out in the bottom of the first to put Cortland up 1-0. The Red Dragons sent 12 batters to the plate in a six-run second inning that featured a Ziemendorf RBI double, a Simon hit-by-pitch with the bases loaded, and a Clock three-run double to left center.

Cortland added a run in the third on Simon's RBI single. Castaldo hit a solo homer in the fifth, and the hosts added three in the sixth on an error, an Adam Smith (Vestal) bases-loaded walk, and a Nick Hart (Fredonia) RBI infield single. Patrick Schetter (Beacon) closed the scoring in the seventh with an RBI single following a Sean Getman (Oneonta) two-out double.
