CORTLAND, N.Y. –
Erin Wolstenholme (Oneonta) singled in two runs and
Carrie Stoddard (Liverpool) hit an RBI double in a five-run sixth inning as Cortland broke a 2-2 tie and defeated Union, 7-2, in the opening game of a doubleheader. The Red Dragons completed the sweep with a 3-1 win over the Dutchwomen in the nightcap.
Cortland improved to 24-10 with the wins, while Union slipped to 9-16. Cortland will host New Paltz in a SUNYAC doubleheader Wednesday at 3 p.m.
Game 1: Cortland 7, Union 2 (Box Score)Cortland opened the scoring on the first batter of the bottom of the first with one of the season's most exciting plays. Junior
Jamie Bucci (Tarrytown/Sleepy Hollow), normally a slap hitter, swung at a 3-2 pitch and hit the ball to deep center field over a drawn-in outfield. Bucci never stopped running and beat the relay throw home for an inside-the-park homer – her first collegiate home run – and the Red Dragons led 1-0.
Union came back to take the lead with two runs in the third. Brianna Godlewski walked and Laura Aptowitz reached on a bunt single. After a pair of fielder's choices left runners on first and third, Joanna Chalifoux hit a double to right center to score two runs and give the Dutchwomen a 2-1 advantage.
Cortland had a leadoff
Niki Barbato (East Meadow/Holy Trinity) go to waste in the fourth after a foul out and a fly out/throw out double play. The Red Dragons, however, rallied to tie the game in the fifth. Pinch hitter
Andrea Schoonmaker (Poughkeepsie/Marlboro) led off with an infield single and was bunted to second by
Courtney Kadish (East Amherst/Williamsville North). Pinch hitter
Kaleigh Churchill (Camillus/West Genesee) followed with a single to move Schoonmaker to third.
Rosie Phillips (Geneva/Our Lady of Mercy) then hit a fly ball to shallow center that Camile Corbin made a nice sliding catch on, but Schoonmaker tagged up and scored to tie the game.
After Union stranded runs on first and second in the sixth, Cortland started its go-ahead rally with a
Diane Cork (Wayland/Wayland-Cohocton) leadoff single. Barbato hit what appeared to be a hit to center, but Corbin threw to force out Cork at second for the first out.
Mikayla Shade (Bethlehem), however, singled to center, and Shade and pinch runner
Alicia Flanagan (Penfield) moved up a base on a wild pitch. Wolstenholme followed with a two-run single through the right side, taking second on an error, and Stoddard hit an RBI double to right center to give Cortland a 5-2 lead. The final two runs scored on a wild pitch and a Cork RBI single for her second hit of the inning.
Jamie Lachall (Philadelphia, PA/Sun Valley) started for Cortland and threw a complete-game six-hitter to improve to 8-2. She struck out four and walked two. Allyson Stats tossed five and a third innings for Union and gave up six runs on nine hits with three strikeouts.
Barbato went 2-for-4 with two doubles and Cork finished 2-for-4 with an RBI, while Bucci was 1-for-3 with a walk and her inside-the-park homer.
Corbin finished 2-for-3 and Chalifoux was 1-for-3 with a double and two RBI for Union.
Game 2: Cortland 3, Union 1 (Box Score)Bucci went 3-for-3 with a run scored to lead Cortland in its second victory. She started the scoring almost single-handedly in the bottom of the first when she singled, stole second, tagged and went to third on a flyout, and scored on that play after an errant throw from center field.
In the second, Wolstenholme led off with a single, was bunted to second by Churchill, moved to third on a wild pitch and scored on a Schoonmaker double to center. The Red Dragons extended their lead to 3-0 in the fifth on a Barbato RBI fielder's choice, with pinch runner
Bianca Trio (Mahopac) beating the throw home from third.
Union's best threat over the first five innings came in the fourth when Staats singled with one out and went to third on the combination of a Molly O'Brien two-out infield single and a throwing error.
Kirstyn Alonzo (Mechanicville), however, entered in relief and struck out the next batter to end the inning.
The Dutchwomen got to Alonzo for a run in the sixth. Dani Hennel led off with a double and scored on a one-out Staats single to left. Staats took second on the throw home, and third when that throw was wild, but she was stranded there as Alonzo got a lineout to right and a groundout to short to end the inning.
Alonzo (5-0) earned the win with two and a third innings of two-hit ball. She gave up one run and struck out four.
Alexandrea Flint (Dalton/Keshequa) gave up one hit in a scoreless seventh for her first collegiate save.
Sarah Salamone (Liverpool/Cicero-North Syracuse) started and did not allow a run over the first three and two thirds innings, but did not pitch the necessary four innings to qualify for the victory. She gave up four hits and fanned two.
Staats went the distance for Union and is now 9-12. She gave up three runs, two earned, on six hits over six innings. She struck out two and walked two. She was also 2-for-3 at the plate with an RBI and Hennel finished 1-for-3 with a run scored.
