CORTLAND, N.Y. – Senior
Marilyn Farrell (Fayetteville/Fayetteville-Manlius) and junior
Tara Monaghan (Stony Point/North Rockland) combined to score 18 points on nine goals and nine assists, reaching six career and individual game milestones, as the nationally fifth-ranked Cortland women's lacrosse team defeated St. John Fisher, 19-4, Thursday afternoon in non-conference action at Stadium Red.
Monaghan scored career highs of eight points and seven goals, and with her first score of the game became the 26th player in program history to reach 100 career goals. Farrell totaled a career-high 10 points on two goals and eight assists. The eight assists were also a personal best and tied the school record set by
Erica Geremia at St. Lawrence during the 2013 season. In addition, Farrell's 10 points put her over 200 in her career as she became just the 13th player in school history to reach that mark.
Senior
Emma Hayes-Hurley (Huntington) added six points on five goals and one assist, won a career-best 12 draw controls and collected three ground balls for the Red Dragons (8-1). Sophomore
Kristen Ohberg (Brewster) tallied two goals and three assists, junior
Nicole Bello (Camillus/West Genesee) scored a career-high four points on two goals and two assists, junior
Ashley Gentile (Baldwinsville/C.W. Baker) netted a goal and freshman
Hannah Elmer (Syracuse/West Genesee) chipped in with two assists. Sophomore goalie
Jaclyn Beshlian (Wantagh) registered three saves.
Juniors Sierra Badger (Constantia/Paul V. Moore) and Chrissy Cook (Black River/Carthage), sophomore Jordan Johnson (Canandaigua/Canandaigua Academy) and freshman Morgan Young (East Syracuse/East Syracuse Minoa) each tallied a goal for the Cardinals (6-4). Badger and senior Samantha Barton (Rochester/Greece Arcadia) secured two draws apiece, while Young recorded three ground balls and senior Lindsey Shoales (West Monroe/Paul V. Moore) caused two turnovers. Junior goalie Nicole Hart (Syracuse/West Genesee) made five saves in 41:29 before giving way to freshman Molly Maguire (Pittsford/Pittsford-Sutherland), who did not stop a shot over the final 18:31.
The game opened with a deliberate pace as the Cardinals remained patient on the offensive end. After Beshlian held St. John Fisher off the scoreboard, the Red Dragons built a 5-0 lead at the 9:56 mark of the first half. Hayes-Hurley started the run and Monaghan followed with three straight scores, the first of which put her at 100 for her career. Bello ended the streak off Farrell's fourth assist of the game. Badger scored for St. John Fisher at 7:35, but Cortland ended the half on a 6-0 run to take a commanding 11-1 lead. Monaghan and Hayes-Hurley each netted two goals and Farrell added two more assists.
The Red Dragons stretched the lead to 17-1 at the 19-minute mark of the second half. Farrell scored twice and recorded two assists during the 6-0 run. Her 200th point came on her first goal at 22:50, and she later tied the single-game assist record on a Hayes-Hurley goal at 19:00. The Cardinals closed the game by outscoring Cortland, 3-2, over the final 15:24 as Young, Cook and Johnson each notched a free-position goal. Monaghan scored both of Cortland's goals with her career-high seventh coming with 6:50 to play.
