#2 Cortland Advances to SUNYAC Final with 21-8 Win vs. Brockport

CORTLAND, N.Y. - Junior Tara Monaghan (Stony Point/North Rockland) scored a career-high eight goals to help lead the top-seeded and nationally second-ranked Cortland women's lacrosse team to a 21-8 victory versus fourth-seeded Brockport in the SUNYAC Semifinals Wednesday afternoon at the Stadium Complex. The host Red Dragons improved their record to 16-1 and will face second-seeded Fredonia, who defeated third-seeded Geneseo, 8-3, in the other semifinal game, Saturday at 12 p.m. in the conference championship game.

Senior Emma Hayes-Hurley (Huntington) scored three times with two assists, junior Ashley Gentile (Baldwinsville/C.W. Baker) added three goals and classmate Nicole Bello (Camillus/West Genesee) netted two goals and had three assists. Sophomore Kristen Ohberg (Brewster) added two goals with an assist, freshman Hannah Elmer (Syracuse/West Genesee) scored once and recorded two assists and senior Marilyn Farrell (Fayettville/Fayetteville-Manlius) and junior Elise Bennett (Webster/Webster Thomas) added a goal each. Sophomore Nicolette Tortorici (Deer Park) also recorded an assist.

Sophomore goalie Jaclyn Beshlian (Wantagh) made 10 saves. Hayes-Hurley won seven draws and Gentile picked up three ground balls and caused three turnovers.

Junior Makensie Schuber (Webster/Webster Thomas) and freshman Jessica Boddery (Webster/Webster Thomas) netted three goals each for the Golden Eagles. Senior Nina Tassone (Liverpool) had a goal and two assists, sophomore Kelly Wall (Clifton Park/Shenendehowa) netted a goal and junior Keely Rice (Potsdam) recorded an assist. Senior goalie Remle Harr (Farmington/Fairport) started for Brockport and made two saves. Junior Ciara McKeon (Westhampton/Westhampton Beach) had a game-high eight draw controls and junior Courtney Szczesniak (Liverpool) picked up a game-high five ground balls.

Hayes-Hurley scored the first two goals of the game for Cortland but Brockport answered right back with goals from Schuber and Tassone to even the score at two with 22:15 remaining in the first half. The Red Dragons then closed the half by outscoring the Golden Eagles 9-2 on four goals from Monaghan, two scores from Ohberg and Gentile and a goal from Hayes-Hurley. Wall and Schuber scored the two goals for Brockport during the run.

Monaghan and Boddery traded goals to open up the second half before Genitle, Monaghan and Farrell scored three unanswered goals for Cortland. Boddery netted a goal for the Golden Eagles, but Cortland scored six unanswered goals, Monaghan and Bello had two goals each and Elmer and Bennett each added a score. Scuber and Boddery scored the final two goals of the game for the Golden Eagles.
