Garcia Wins ECAC 100-Meter Dash Title; Red Dragons 20th in Team Standings

Nick Vachon earned All-ECAC honors with an eighth-place finish in the high jump. He was one of six tied with the third-best height.
SPRINGFIELD, MASS. – The Cortland men's outdoor track and field team finished in 20th place out of 57 schools at the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Div. III Championships Thursday and Friday at Springfield College.

Three Red Dragons finished in the top eight to score points and earn All-ECAC honors. Cortland finished with 15 points. Brockport won the team title with 72 points.

Melique Garcia (Watervliet) won the 100-meter dash title in 10.81 seconds after registering a time of 10.74 seconds in prelims.

Mitch Ryan (Plattsburgh/Seton Catholic) finished fifth in the 3,000-meter steeplechase in 9:32.81 and Nick Vachon (Endwell/Maine-Endwell) placed eighth in the high jump by clearing 2.03 meters (6' 8"). Vachon was one of six athletes tied with the third-best height, but officially finished eighth due to number of misses at the tied height and number of total misses.

Two other Red Dragons earned top-10 finishes. Romain Saint Germain (Westbury) placed 10th in the 200-meter dash (22.26) and Jerel Williams (East Islip) was 10th in the 400 meters (49.13).

Cortland will compete at the NCAA Div. III Championships next Thursday through Saturday, May 21-23, at St. Lawrence University in Canton, N.Y. For the men, the top 20 performers nationally in each individual event, and the top 16 relays, qualify for nationals. Currently, Garcia ranks fourth in the 200 meters and 16th in the 100 meters, Nick Marcantonio (Glens Falls) is eighth in the 10,000 meters, Joe Shinn (New Rochelle) is 12th in the 110-meter hurdles, Connor Christopherson (Morrisonville/Saranac) is 14th in the decathlon, and Jarred Iacovelli (Manahawkin, NJ/Southern Regional) is 19th in the 3,000-meter steeplechase.
