Cortland Men Win Seven Event Titles at SUNYAC Championships

Connor Christopherson set a SUNYAC meet record with his winning decathlon score of 6,309 points. He also won the decathlon league crown last spring.
BROCKPORT, N.Y. – Cortland won six individual titles and one relay crown and finished third in the team standings at the 2015 State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) Men's Outdoor Track and Field Championships.

Brockport won the team title with 204.5 points, followed by Oneonta (157.5), Cortland (146.5), Geneseo (74), Buffalo St. (72), Fredonia (68), Oswego (64) and Plattsburgh (28.5).

Cortland established two SUNYAC meet records during the two-day event. Jarred Iacovelli (Manahawkin, NJ/Southern Regional) set a meet record in the 3,000-meter steeplechase in 9:15.97. Connor Christopherson (Morrisonville/Saranac) repeated as league champion in the decathlon with a meet record score of 6,309 points, more than 450 points higher than his winning score last spring. He scored 791 points in the 400-meter dash (50.51), 784 points in the 100-meter dash (11.35) and 776 points in the 110-meter hurdles (15.62). Christopherson currently ranks eighth nationally in Div. III with his decathlon score.

Melique Garcia (Watervliet) repeated as league champion in the 100-meter dash in 10.81 seconds (10.68 in prelims) and also won the 200-meter dash in 21.35 seconds. He currently ranks second nationally in the 200 and ninth in the 100 with his efforts.

Nick Vachon (Endwell/Maine-Endwell) won the high jump at 2.03 meters (6' 8") and Nick Marcantonio (Glens Falls) was the 5,000-meter champion in 14:57.47.

Cortland also won the 4x400-meter relay as Corey Cooper (Edgemont), Bryce Johnson (Dix Hills/Half Hollow Hills West), Richard Taylor (Westbury) and Jerel Williams (East Islip) finished in 3:20.45. They currently rank 12th nationally.

The individual league champions earn first-team All-SUNYAC honors, while individual runners-up are recognized as second-team all-conference.

Earning second-team honors with runner-up showings were: Mitch Ryan (Plattsburgh/Seton Catholic) in the 3,000-meter steeplechase (9:26.29) and Connor Ten Eyck (Clifton Park/Shenendehowa) in the pole vault (4.65 meters - 15' 3").

Cortland will compete at the ECAC Div. III Outdoor Championships on Thursday and Friday, May 14-15, at Springfield College. The Red Dragons may try to add another meet on their schedule this upcoming weekend.
