SCHENECTADY, N.Y. - Cortland split two matches during the second day of competition to finish 1-3 at the Union College Invitational. The Red Dragons defeated Skidmore in four sets before falling to Div. II St. Michael's of Vermont in five sets.
Junior
Samantha Czeczotka (Elwood/John H. Glenn) was named to the all-tournament team. She led Cortland with 47 kills and a .240 attack percentage and added 31 digs in four matches.
Cortland opened Saturday's play with a 25-21, 25-9, 20-25, 25-17 win over Skidmore. Sophomore
Courtney Silberer (Centereach) finished with 13 kills, five aces, 14 digs and four blocks, while her sister, sophomore
Nicole Silberer (Centereach), added 11 kills. Sophomore
Amanda May (Baldwinsville/C.W. Baker) chipped in with 10 kills, four blocks and two aces, Czeczotka had nine kills and three aces, and freshman
Deja Smith (Suffern) recorded seven kills, two blocks, and a .353 attack percentage (one error in 17 attempts).
Junior
Vanessa Carmesin (Leverkusen, Germany/Landrat-Lucas Gymnasium) finished with 27 assists. Junior
Melanie McGuirk (Lido Beach/Kellenberg) led the team with 23 digs and sophomore
Sarah Piacentini (Webster/Webster Schroeder) added 10 digs.
Caite Canfield led Skidmore (2-6) with 14 kills and added 15 digs. Allie Dillon put down 10 kills.
St. Michael's (4-1), which won the tournament with a 4-0 record, rallied to defeat Cortland in five sets, 18-25, 25-23, 19-25, 25-17, 15-7. Czeczotka paced the Red Dragons with 19 kills with just three errors in 39 attempts for a .410 attack percentage.
Nicole Silberer had 13 kills and Carmesin totaled 47 assists and three aces.
Courtney Silberer served eight aces and added 18 digs and six kills. May recorded eight kills and McGuirk finished with four aces and a team-best 21 digs.
Kelsey Flaherty and Candace Washington led St. Michael's with 13 and 12 kills, respectively. Megan Mulvaney had five blocks.
Cortland (3-7), which has lost four five-set matches this fall, will host the University of Scranton in a dual match Wednesday at 6 p.m.
