OSWEGO, N.Y. – The nationally 25th-ranked Cortland women's cross country team opened its 2015 season with a second-place finish at the Oswego Invitational.
The Red Dragons posted a team score of 43 points in the 10-team field. Third-ranked Geneseo won with 21 points, followed by Cortland, SUNY-ESF (105), William Smith (109) and Oswego (127) in the top five.
Six Cortland runners placed in the top 20 out of 124 runners competing. Senior
Kailyn Balzano (East Greenbush/Columbia) and junior
Mary Baughman (Rush/Rush-Henrietta) basically crossed the finish line together, with Balzano officially third in 19:45.4 and Baughman fourth in 19:45.9 on the 5,000-meter course. Geneseo's Olivia Ryan won the race in 19:36.
Junior
Allison Schumann (North Salem) finished 10th in 19:55, while senior
Kayla Blomback (Orchard Park) was 13th (20:05) and senior
Kerri Culhane (Sayville) finished 15th (20:08). Sophomore
Sara Billings (Gansevoort/South Glens Falls) crossed the line in 20th place (20:18).
Five more Cortland runners finished in the top third of the field. Freshman
Gwen Proper (Sylvan Beach/Camden) finished 28th (20:30), freshman
Brenna Lyons (Addison) was 30th (20:34), and senior
Jackie Boyce (Schaghticoke/Greenwich) placed 32nd (20:43). Sophomore
Megan Wagner (Niskayuna) finished 33rd (20:44) and junior
Danielle Milo (West Islip) turned in a 36th-place effort (20:57).
Cortland, ranked fifth in the Div. III Atlantic Region, will compete at the Rochester Yellowjacket Invitational next Saturday.
