Cortland Rallies to Win Final Two Sets in 3-2 Victory at Hamilton

CLINTON, N.Y. - Cortland rallied to win the final two sets and defeat host Hamilton College, 3-2, in a non-league women's volleyball match. The Red Dragons won 21-25, 27-25, 13-25, 25-16, 15-10 for their first five-set win in five tries this fall. Cortland is now 11-0 lifetime versus the Continentals.

Sophomore Courtney Silberer (Centereach) also totaled 15 kills and added eight digs and sophomore Amanda May (Baldwinsville/C.W. Baker) had 10 kills, three aces and a .276 attack percentage.

Sophomore Nicole Silberer (Centereach) contributed nine kills and two aces to the winning cause. Junior Liz Roberts (Island Park/West Hempstead) recorded 53 assists for more than 10 assists per set, and junior Melanie McGuirk (Lido Beach/Kellenberg) served two aces and led the team with 31 digs. Hamilton (1-5) finished the first set on a 5-3 run to win 25-21. The Continentals then led 23-18 in the second set, but Cortland (5-7) scored six straight points, including two kills by May, to take a 24-23 lead. Hamilton fought off one set point after a Cortland error and scored again to go up 25-24, but May answered with two consecutive kills, and an error by Hamilton gave the Red Dragons the 27-25 win.

The hosts thoroughly dominated the third set, scoring eight straight points to turn a 9-5 lead into a comfortable 17-5 score on the way to a 25-13 decision. But Cortland righted the ship in the fourth set. The Red Dragons used an 8-2 run to take a 14-7 lead and were never seriously threatened in a 25-16 win.

Cortland fell behind 6-4 in the fifth set before going on a 5-0 run that featured three Czeczotka kills and a Courtney Silberer ace. Czeczotka also provided two kills and an ace over the next six points to give Cortland a 13-8 lead. Hamilton tallied the next two points, but Cortland wrapped up the set and the match with a Nicole Silberer kill and a McGuirk ace.
