Game Recap: Field Hockey |

#19 Field Hockey Falls to #5 Skidmore, 2-0

CORTLAND, N.Y. – Senior Dani DeGregory (Greenwich) tallied a pair of first-half goals to lead the nationally fifth-ranked Skidmore field hockey team to a 2-0 victory over 19th-ranked Cortland Saturday afternoon at the SUNY Cortland Stadium Complex White Field in non-conference action. The Red Dragons fell to 1-1, while the Thoroughbreds improved to 2-0.

For Cortland, freshman goalie Kailynne Reinoehl (Lititz, PA/Warwick) turned aside 10 shots. Sophomore goalie Zoe McGuire (Delmar/Emma Willard School) registered five saves in posting the shutout for Skidmore.

DeGregory scored her first goal of the game 13:36 into the opening half. She carried the ball through the middle of the field, cut across the circle, deked out Reinoehl and deposited a low shot inside the left post. Cortland nearly tied the game with just over five minutes remaining in the half, but junior Gabby Stein's deflection at the left post hit the outside of the cage. DeGregory then upped Skidmore's lead to 2-0 at the 33:10 mark when she blasted her own rebound through traffic from eight yards out.

After outshooting Cortland, 10-3, in the first half, the Thoroughbreds held an 8-4 advantage in shots and 5-1 edge in penalty corners in the second half. The Red Dragons had an excellent chance to cut into the lead with just over 18 minutes remaining in the game, but McGuire denied sophomore Victoria Dean's (Endwell/Maine-Endwell) hard shot from the left side.

In the later stages of the contest, Cortland was forced to play one player down for five minutes and was unable to generate any more quality opportunities.
