CORTLAND, N.Y. – Cortland finished with a 2-2 record at its Red Dragon Classic women's volleyball tournament after sweeping St. Lawrence and Utica during the second day of the 12-team event. Cortland (2-4) beat the Saints, 25-23, 25-9, 25-23, and the Pioneers, 25-12, 25-23, 25-17.
Buffalo State and Fredonia each finished the tournament with 4-0 records. Buffalo State was declared the champion based on having played only 16 total sets compared to Fredonia's 18. Stockton University was 3-1 during the weekend, while Cortland, Nazareth, Lebanon Valley, Wells and Rochester were each 2-2.
Junior
Samantha Czeczotka (Elwood/John H. Glenn) represented Cortland on the all-tournament team. She finished with eight kills, a .385 attack percentage and seven digs versus St. Lawrence, and she had eight kills and 12 digs against Utica. Czeczotka led Cortland during the tournament with 33 kills and a .291 attack percentage and was second with 52 digs.
Sophomore
Amanda May (Baldwinsville/C.W. Baker) led the Red Dragons versus St. Lawrence with nine kills and a .400 attack percentage and had three blocks. Sophomore
Courtney Silberer (Centereach) totaled eight kills and seven digs and junior
Liz Roberts (Island Park/West Hempstead) finished with 29 assists, three aces, 12 digs and five blocks. Junior
Melanie McGuirk (Lido Beach/Kellenberg) added a team-high four aces along with 11 digs.
May turned in one of the weekend's strongest performances with 17 kills and just one error in 32 attempts for a .500 attack percentage against Utica. Sophomore
Nicole Silberer (Centereach) matched Czeczotka with eight kills and McGuirk led the way with 15 digs. Roberts dished out 39 assists for a 13 assist-per-set average.
Cortland will travel to the Union College Invitational next Friday and Saturday. The Red Dragons will play the host Dutchwomen and Williams College Friday at 4 and 6 p.m., followed Saturday by matches against Skidmore at 11 a.m. and Division II St. Michael's of Vermont at 1 p.m.
