Cortland Men Register Strong Performances at Cornell Kane Invitational

Jack Flood finished sixth in the 60-meter hurdles, 10th in the long jump, and led off the fifth-place 4x400-meter relay team
ITHACA, N.Y. – Three Cortland men posted ECAC qualifying performances and many others placed in the top half of their events at the Cornell University Robert J. Kane Indoor Track and Field Invitational.

Mitch Couch (Oneonta) finished third out of 19 competitors in the weight throw with an ECAC mark of 15.56 meters (51' 0.75"). Dawan Jones (Buffalo/Tapestry Charter) was fifth of 11 in the triple jump with an ECAC distance of 13.71 meters (44' 11.75"), and Jack Flood (Blue Point/Bayport-Blue Point) was sixth of 17 in the 60-meter hurdles in 8.71 seconds. Flood's prelim time of 8.63 seconds was an ECAC qualifier.

Nick Marcantonio (Glens Falls) and Mitch Ryan (Plattsburgh/Seton Catholic) finished second (8:53.07) and fourth (8:58.42), respectively, in the 3,000-meter run. Three Red Dragons earned top-eight finishes out of 20 entrants in the shot put. Kyle Howe (Scipio Center/Southern Cayuga) finished fourth at 13.80 meters (45' 3.5"), barely ahead of Couch's fifth-place distance of 13.79 meters (45' 3"), and Tyler Hochadel (Hamburg/Frontier) was eighth at 13.06 meters (42' 10.25").

Two different 4x400-meter relay teams earned top-five showings out of 17 entries. Connor Christopherson (Morrisonville/Saranac), John Nitterour (Big Flats/Horseheads), Zach Meszler (Altamont/Herkimer) and Jerel Williams (East Islip) were third in 3:28.83, and Flood, Jon Feil (Guilderland), Aaron Granger (Delevan/Pioneer) and Romain Saint Germain (Westbury) finished fifth in 3:33.29.

Christopherson also placed sixth of 23 in the 400 meters (52.35) and Flood was 10th of 26 in the long jump (6.55 meters - 21' 6"). Grant Boyd (Newburgh/Newburgh Free Academy) placed fourth of nine in the 5,000-meter run (16:35.28), and Charlie Kollmer (Mount Sinai) tied for sixth of 15 in the pole vault (4.20 meters - 13' 9.25").

Three Cortland athletes ended in the top 15 out of 33 runners in the 800 meters. Granger was sixth in 2:01.10, right ahead of Feil in seventh place at 2:01.27, and Nate Ashton (Norwich) placed 13th in 2:04.63.

Alec Swider (Glenville/Scotia-Glenville) finished seventh of 25 in the 200-meter dash (23.06) and Micheal Outing (Farmingdale) was eighth of 17 in the 60-meter hurdles (8.67). Mike Cruz (West Haverstraw/North Rockland) placed 13th in the long jump (6.18 meters - 20' 3.5"), Meszler was 12th of 27 in the 60-meter dash (7.24), and Andrew Espey (West Hempstead/Holy Trinity) finished 18th of 45 in the mile run (4:32.64).

Cortland will compete at the Ithaca College Bomber Invitational and Multi next Saturday and Sunday, Feb. 6-7.
