Miranda Fergus broke her own school record and set an Oneonta pool mark with her 11-dive score of 468.15 points on the 1-meter board
ONEONTA, N.Y. – Senior
Miranda Fergus (Millbrook) broke her own school record and set an Oneonta pool record in 1-meter diving, and freshman
Elizabeth Connolly (Lockport) won two individual events, as Cortland defeated Oneonta, 139-104, in a women's swimming and diving dual meet.
Fergus recorded an 11-dive score of 468.15 points on the 1-meter board, eclipsing her previous school mark of 454.40 points set in 2013. There was no 3-meter diving at the meet, so for dual purposes the 1-meter diving was broken into two events, both of which Fergus won.
Connolly won the 1,000-yard freestyle (11:23.41) and the 100-yard freestyle (54.59). She nearly pulled off three individual victories, but lost by just under seven tenths of a second in the 500-yard freestyle with her second-place time of 5:31.68.
Amanda Grossman (Schaghticoke/Hoosic Valley) won the 100-yard backstroke (1:03.14) and
Chloe Freideman (Whitney Point) was victorious in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:13.63). Cortland also took the top two spots in the 200-yard freestyle relay.
Whitney Mietz (Rochester/Brighton),
Natalie Johnson (Canandaigua/Marcus Whitman),
Angelica Ford (Elk Grove Village, IL) and Grossman finished first in 1:45.81, with
Emily McGurk (Monroe/Monroe-Woodbury),
Brianne Munch (East Lyme, CT),
Erin Smith (Bethpage) and
Kalee Walden (Dryden) second in 1:48.60.
McGurk finished second in the 1,000-yard freestyle (11:47.20), Walden was second in the 50-yard freestyle (26.83), and Ford was runner-up in the 400-yard individual medley (5:00.12). Johnson placed second in the 100-yard backstroke (1:05.10),
Kelly Lambkin (Monroe/Monroe-Woodbury) finished second in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:13.73), and
Chelsey Simon (Oneida) touched the wall second in the 100-yard butterfly (1:01.11).
Also for the Red Dragons,
Jackie Bors (Buffalo/North Tonawanda) turned in the second-best 1-meter diving score, behind Fergus, with an 11-dive total of 335.56 points, and the 400-yard medley relay of Ford, Lambkin, Simon and Grossman finished second in 4:19.50.
Cortland will conclude its regular-season schedule on Saturday, Feb. 6, at Fredonia at 1 p.m.
