Three Cortland Women in Top 80 at Rowan Inter-Regional Race

Gwen Proper was Cortland's sixth finisher in the championship race
GLASSBORO, N.J. – Three Cortland runners placed in the top 80 as the Red Dragons finished in 20th place out of 45 schools at the Rowan University Inter-Regional Border Battle.

Cortland finished with a team score of 496 points, 11 points better than Swarthmore and 13 behind Plattsburgh. Johns Hopkins won the team title with 70 points.

Senior Mary Baughman (Rush/Rush-Henrietta) finished 26th out of 386 runners in 21 minutes, 36.5 seconds over 6,000 meters. Amy Regan of Stevens Institute was the individual champion in 20:17.6. Baughman was 42nd at the 2,000-meter point of the race before eventually finishing in 26th.

Senior Allison Schumann (North Salem) placed 70th in 22:21.1 and junior Megan Wagner (Niskayuna) finished 80th in 22:29.3. Schumann steadily moved up from 179th at 2,000 meters to 95th at 3,500 meters on her way to 70th, while Wagner also improved throughout the race from 177th at the 2K mark to 94th at 3,500 meters before placing 80th.

Rounding out Cortland's seven runners were freshman Eliza Nichols (Smithtown/Smithtown West) in 169th place (23:20.8), junior Jasmine Meerdink (Rome/Rome Free Academy) in 198th place (23:37.3), sophomore Gwen Proper (Sylvan Beach/Camden) in 240th place (24:00.8), and junior Sara Billings (Gansevoort/South Glens Falls) in 259th place (24:33.8).

Cortland also had four runners compete in the open division race. Junior Melissa Emilio (Oneonta) finished that 6,000-meter race 105th in 26:03.6 and junior Allison Segal (Merrick/Sanford H. Calhoun) was 106th in 26:06.5.

Cortland will return to action on Friday, October 21 at the Cornell University John Reif Memorial Run.
