Cortland Shakes Off Slow Starts in First and Third Sets to Sweep St. John Fisher

PITTSFORD, N.Y. - Cortland overcame early deficits of six and seven points in the first and third sets and the Red Dragons swept host St. John Fisher, 25-23, 25-16, 27-25, in a non-league women's volleyball match. Cortland (17-13) improved to 33-0 all-time against the Cardinals, who are now 11-17 on the year.

Cortland trailed 9-3 in the first set and also was behind 23-21 before scoring the final four points. In the third set, Fisher opened with a 9-2 lead and was still ahead 22-18 before the Red Dragons rallied to tie the set at 23-23. Cortland then fought off two set points before finally scoring on a Valerie Fischer (Williston Park/Mineola) kill and a Sarah Piacentini (Webster/Webster Schroeder) ace to win the set and the match.

In the second set, Cortland jumped out to an 8-0 lead and held at least a six-point advantage the rest of the way.

Fischer led the Red Dragons with a career-high 16 kills and a .351 attack percentage along with eight digs. Courtney Silberer (Centereach) added six kills and three blocks and Nicole Silberer (Centereach) had five kills. Piacentini finished with 28 assists, three aces and eight digs, Alexandra Graff (Apex, NC) had 17 digs, and Samantha Czeczotka (Elwood/John H. Glenn) added eight digs and two aces.

Anna Marcy recorded 15 kills and 10 digs and Amanda Miller had eight kills for the hosts. Phoebe Kane totaled four aces and 20 assists and Jessica Simonetti had 14 digs.

Cortland finished with a .260 team attack percentage, including a .350 mark (nine kills, two errors in 20 attempts) in the second set. Fisher closed the night with a .137 attack percentage.

Cortland will wrap up its season Friday and Saturday at the Houghton College Highlander Invitational. The Red Dragons face Utica and Hiram (Ohio) on Friday at 4 and 6 p.m., respectively, and will play Houghton and Keuka Saturday at 11 a.m. and 3 p.m., respectively.
