OSWEGO, N.Y. - Cortland split two matches during the second day of SUNYAC competition in Oswego, losing in straight sets to Fredonia before beating Potsdam in four sets.
Cortland is now 12-11 overall and 2-4 in SUNYAC play. The Red Dragons' last three league matches will be at home October 21-22 versus Plattsburgh, Geneseo and New Paltz. Cortland is currently seventh in the league standings with its 2-4 mark, one game behind 3-3 Geneseo and two behind Fredonia, Oswego and Oneonta, all tied for third at 4-2. The top six teams in the regular season standings qualify for the SUNYAC postseason tournament.
Fredonia defeated Cortland, 25-18, 25-9, 27-25 behind Kristen Stanek's 12 kills.
Nicole Silberer (Centereach) led Cortland with seven kills and
Alexandra Graff (Apex, NC) finished with 20 digs. Cortland fought back from a 24-20 deficit in the third set and eventually tied things at 24-24 by fighting off four match points. Fredonia regained the lead at 25-24, but Cortland again tied it before the Blue Devils tallied the final two points.
Cortland returned to the court Saturday afternoon and beat Potsdam, 25-21, 20-25, 25-11, 25-12. The Red Dragons posted a .276 team attack percentage, including a .485 mark (19 kills, 3 errors, 33 attempts) in the third set.
Amanda May (Baldwinsville/C.W. Baker) and
Courtney Silberer (Centereach) led the way with 13 kills apiece, with each of them registering at least a .400 attack percentage. N. Silberer added 10 kills and
Sarah Piacentini (Webster/Webster Schroeder) finished with 49 assists for more than 12 per set.
Also in the win over the Bears,
Grace Staudt (Point Lookout/Kellenberg Memorial) served four aces, Graff had 24 kills, and
Valerie Fischer (Williston Park/Mineola) added 15 digs and eight kills. May and Piacentini shared the team lead with three blocks apiece.
Rachel Topf led Potsdam (13-8, 1-5 SUNYAC) with 13 kills and Brianna Rodda had 30 assists.
Cortland returns to action at the Elmira College Invitational Friday and Saturday, October 14-15.
