GLASSBORO, N.J. – Cortland senior
Mitch Ryan (Plattsburgh/Seton Catholic) earned all-region honors for the third straight season at the NCAA Division III Atlantic Regional men's cross country meet, hosted by Rowan University.
Ryan finished 21st out of 303 runners in 24 minutes, 58.8 seconds over an 8,000-meter course. The top 35 runners earn all-region recognition Ryan placed sixth at regionals last year and 22nd in 2014. Geneseo's Isaac Garcia-Cassani won the race in 24:15.8.
Cortland finished 14th out of 44 teams with a score of 359 points. Geneseo won the team title with 51 points, followed by RPI with 87, TCNJ with 169, NYU with 171 and Oneonta with 176. Geneseo and RPI automatically qualified for nationals with their top-two finishes. Other potential at-large team selections (16 total over eight regions) will be announced on Sunday. The top seven individuals not on qualifying teams will also advance to nationals, but Ryan will not qualify for that list.
Three other Cortland runners earned top-100 finishes. Freshman
Cabel McCandless (Lindenhurst) finished 58th in 25:49.9, junior
Aaron Granger (Delevan/Pioneer) was 68th in 26:00.1, and sophomore
Grant Boyd (Newburgh/Newburgh Free Academy) placed 86th in 26:09.9.
Rounding out the Red Dragon contingent were freshman
Andrew Boyce (Cortland) in 127th place (26:39.4), sophomore
Chris Thorpe (Pine Bush) in 159th place (27:12.9), and sophomore
Andrew Espey (West Hempstead/Holy Trinity) in 166th place (27:18.9). The Red Dragons matched their 14th place team finish from last year despite one of their top runners,
Nolan Vest (Coram/Longwood), not competing due to injury.
