Oneonta Stuns Cortland, 2-1 in OT, in SUNYAC Semifinals

CORTLAND, N.Y. - Amanda Frayer scored 12 minutes, 53 seconds into overtime as fourth-seeded Oneonta upset top-seeded Cortland, 2-1, in the SUNYAC field hockey tournament semifinals.

Oneonta (5-12) will play at third-seeded Geneseo, a 1-0 winner at second seed New Paltz, in the SUNYAC title game Saturday. Cortland closes the season with a 14-4 record.

Cortland took a 1-0 lead 23 minutes into the game on Jess Gibaldi's (Westbury/W.T. Clarke) 10th goal of the season. A shot by Gabby Stein (Endwell/Maine-Endwell) was saved by Oneonta goalie Danell Jones, but Gibaldi knocked home the rebound to put the hosts in front. Cortland had a chance to extend its lead later in the first half, but a shot by Anna Branch (Clifton Park/Shenendehowa) was cleared away from the goal line at the last second by Oneonta defender Allyson Bilow.

Cortland outshot Oneonta in the first half, 13-3, but the game was pretty evenly played in the second half with Cortland holding a 3-2 shot advantage. Oneonta tied the game with 11:14 left in regulation on a goal by Casey Stata. Carissa Warren dribbled along the left end line and sent a ball in front of the cage that Stata knocked in.

The game went to 7-v-7 sudden victory overtime. A shot by Stata was stopped by a Meg Redmond (Accord/Rondout Valley) defensive save, but the rebound came out to Frayer on the left side, and she buried a shot into the upper left of the cage for the walk-off game winner with 2:07 left in the first 15-minute overtime period.

Jones recorded 10 saves for Oneonta, while Kailynne Reinoehl (Lititz, PA/Warwick) made four saves for Cortland.

UPDATE (Nov. 5):  Gibaldi and Redmond were named to the all-tournament team at the conclusion of the tournament. Geneseo defeated Oneonta, 3-2 in overtime, in the title game.
