Angelica Ford Triple Winner at Hamilton Invite; Red Dragons Barely Miss Team Title

Angelica Ford was the lone women's competitor to earn three individual victories
CLINTON, N.Y. – Angelica Ford (Elk Grove Village, IL/Elk Grove) won three individual events to help Cortland finish in second place out of eight teams at the two-day Hamilton College Women's Swimming and Diving Invitational. The Red Dragons were barely edged out for the team title by Hamilton, which finished with 669 points to Cortland's 668.5.

Oneonta narrowly placed behind Cortland for third with 657 points. Rounding out the field were Smith (524), Oswego (425), Potsdam (384), Mount Holyoke (375) and Buffalo State (101.5).

Ford was the lone woman to record three individual victories at the meet. She won the 200-yard individual medley in 2:15.02, the 400-yard individual medley in 4:49.45, and the 200-yard backstroke in 2:15.53.

Ford also anchored Cortland's second-place 400-yard medley relay team. Natalie Johnson (Canandaigua/Marcus Whitman), Alana Szewczyk (South Wales/Holland) and Emily McGurk (Monroe/Monroe-Woodbury) swam the first three legs in that race, with Cortland clocking in at 4:15.93.

Cortland also tied Mount Holyoke for second place in the 200-yard medley relay with Johnson, Szewczyk, McGurk and Kalee Walden (Dryden) finishing in 1:56.05. The 400-yard freestyle relay team (names currently not available) finished third (3:49.08), and the 800-yard freestyle relay squad of Jasmine Elmassry (Queens/Francis Lewis), Rachel Noach (White Plains), McGurk and Ford finished fourth (8:36.28).

Johnson finished third in the 100-yard backstroke (1:03.02) and fourth in the 100-yard butterfly (1:02.35). McGurk registered a fourth-place showing in the 100-yard freestyle (57.15) and a fifth-place effort in the 200-yard butterfly (2:21.91).

Caroline Tighe (East Meadow) earned fifth-place points with six-dive scores of 201.70 points in 1-meter diving and 213.50 points in 3-meter diving. She went on to have the fourth-best scores in both of those events after 11 dives (370.20 points on 1-meter and 393.50 points on 3-meter).

The Red Dragons earned four fifth-place individual finishes: Szewczyk in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:13.00); Elmassry in the 1,650-yard freestyle (19:23.82); Noach in the 200-yard backstroke (2:20.81); and Kelly Lambkin (Monroe/Monroe-Woodbury) in the 200-yard breaststroke (2:40.58). Also, Walden was sixth in the 50-yard freestyle (26.70) and Erica Koumas (East Meadow) ended up sixth in the 200-yard butterfly (2:23.85).

Cortland finished the meet with six top-six relay finishes. In addition to those already mentioned, the 200-yard freestyle relay unit of Becca Kanoza (Syracuse/West Genesee), Kelly Davey (Plattsburgh), McGurk and Johnson finished fifth (1:46.18), while another 200-yard freestyle relay team of Emma Gulbin (Wall Township, NJ/Wall), Halle King (Auburn/Skaneateles), Darby LaFlamme (Niskayuna) and Walden finished sixth (1:47.84).

Cortland will be idle until it travels to Hartwick College for a dual meet on Friday, January 6.
