Red Dragon Women Break School DMR Record at Boston Univ. Meet

Kaylee Uhl ran the third leg on Cortland's school record-setting Distance Medley Relay
BOSTON, MASS. and ITHACA, N.Y. – Cortland's women's Distance Medley Relay team of Kailyn Balzano (East Greenbush/Columbia), Dana Kupiec (Salem), Kaylee Uhl (Waverly) and Kayla Blomback (Orchard Park) set a school record at the Boston University Valentine Invitational to highlight the Red Dragons' performances at two weekend meets.

Cortland finished with eight ECAC-qualifying efforts at Boston University on Friday and Saturday, as well as one at the Cornell University Sunday Invitational to close the weekend.

The Red Dragons finished ninth of 30 teams in the DMR at BU with a time of 11:54.12, eclipsing the previous school record of 12:03.08 set last season. Cortland currently ranks fourth nationally in Division III with its performance. Balzano, Kupiec and Blomback were also part of the previous record-holding team.

Kupiec recorded two ECAC individual efforts, narrowly missing school records in both events. She was 62nd of 239 in the 200-meter dash in 25.77 seconds, just over two tenths of a second from a school record, and was 46th of 196 in the 400 meters in 57.79 seconds, about three tenths of a second away from a school mark. Her 400-meter time currently ranks 24th nationally.

Balzano finished 41st of 246 in the mile with an ECAC time of 5:00.79 that ranks 27th nationally. Blomback and Kerri Culhane (Sayville) also met ECAC standards in the mile. Blomback turned in a 54th-place time of 5:04.34 and Culhane was 79th in 5:10.52.

Two Red Dragons, in addition to Kupiec, earned ECAC qualifying times in the 200-meter dash. Midge Moore (Massapequa) was 69th in 25.85 seconds and Raheemah Madany (Bennington, VT/Mount Anthony Union) was 90th in 26.05 seconds.

At Cornell, Kayla Koelbel (Bradford, PA/Kings Park (NY)) turned in Cortland's lone ECAC effort with a fifth-place finish in the 60-meter hurdles. She was clocked at 9.40 seconds in prelims and 9.44 seconds in the finals.

Koelbe also placed eighth of 21 in the 200-meter dash in 27.47 seconds. Brenda Perrella (Hamburg/Frontier) finished sixth of 16 in the shot put at 11.33 meters (37' 2.25") and seventh of 15 in the weight throw at 14.17 meters (46' 6").

Also for the Red Dragons, Mary Baughman (Rush/Rush-Henrietta) finished fourth in the 3,000 meters (11:13.75), Melissa Emilio (Oneonta) was fifth in the 800 meters (2:24.62), and Diamond Jackson (Farmingville/Sachem East) placed eighth in the shot put at 10.91 meters (35' 9.5").

Cortland will compete at the Cornell Deneault Memorial next Saturday, February 20.
