Miranda Fergus Breaks Own School Record to Win SUNYAC 1-Meter Diving Crown

Miranda Fergus won her first SUNYAC title with a school-record score on the 1-meter board
BUFFALO, N.Y. – Senior Miranda Fergus (Millbrook) captured a league title in 1-meter diving with a school-record performance as Cortland opened the first day of competition at the State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) Women's Swimming and Diving Championships.

Fergus claimed her first league crown with an 11-dive score of 475.40 points. Her preliminary score of 481.75 points broke he own school record, with her finals total reflecting scores after she repeated her first six dives while keeping her other five. Fergus earned first team All-SUNYAC recognition with her victory.

Cortland is in third place in the team standings with two days remaining. Geneseo leads with 305 points, followed by New Paltz (188), Cortland (114), Fredonia (103) and Oneonta (102.5) in the top five. Brockport (91), Oswego (71.5), Buffalo St. (59) and Potsdam (54) round out the field.

Cortland's 200-yard freestyle relay team of freshman Elizabeth Connolly (Lockport), senior Chelsey Simon (Oneida), junior Amanda Grossman (Schaghticoke/Hoosic Valley) and sophomore Kalee Walden (Dryden) finished in third place in 1:39.26. The Red Dragons' 400-yard medley relay team was disqualified.

Connolly placed seventh in the 500-yard freestyle in 5:20.30 (5:17.89 in prelims), followed by Simon in eighth place (5:30.41, 5:19.86 in prelims), and junior Angelica Ford (Elk Grove Village, IL) was seventh in the 200-yard individual medley (2:12.21). Grossman won the "B" final in the 50-yard freestyle (24.79) to finish ninth overall.

Four other Red Dragons scored points during Thursday's action. Freshman Jackie Bors (Buffalo/North Tonawanda) finished 10th in 1-meter diving with 325.80 points and sophomore Jacqueline Lang (Middletown/Pine Bush) was 13th with 291.35 points. Junior Emily McGurk (Monroe/Monroe-Woodbury) placed 12th in the 200-yard individual medley in 2:16.37 (2:15.30 in prelims), and senior Brianne Munch (East Lyme, CT) finished 15th in the 500-yard freestyle in 5:31.44 (5:27.97 in prelims).
