Cortland Women Hold On to Third After Day 2 of SUNYAC Championships

BUFFALO, N.Y. – Junior Angelica Ford (Elk Grove Village, IL) placed second in the 400-yard individual medley and swam a leg on Cortland's third-place 800-yard freestyle relay team during the second full day of competition at the State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) Women's Swimming and Diving Championships.

Cortland maintained its third-place position in the team standings with one day remaining. Geneseo (650) and New Paltz (445) have command over the top two spots. Cortland (279) and Oneonta (243.5) are battling for third place, with Fredonia (183) in fifth and Oswego (167.5) in sixth. Rounding out the field are Buffalo St. (134), Brockport (129) and Potsdam (121). The competition is being held at the Burt Flickinger Center at Erie Community College.

Ford finished the 400-yard individual medley in 4:40.29 for her second-place effort and second team All-SUNYAC honors. The winner of each individual event is first team all-conference, with second and third-place finishers earning second team all-league recognition.

Senior Chelsey Simon (Oneida), senior Brianne Munch (East Lyme, CT), Ford and freshman Elizabeth Connolly (Lockport) finished third in the 800-yard freestyle relay in 8:02.07, while freshman Natalie Johnson (Canandaigua/Marcus Whitman), junior Kelly Lambkin (Monroe/Monroe-Woodbury), Simon and junior Amanda Grossman (Schaghticoke/Hoosic Valley) finished fourth in the 200-yard medley relay (1:50.28). Grossman earned a fifth-place finish in the 100-yard backstroke (1:00.65) and Connolly was sixth in the 200-yard freestyle (1:58.77, 1:57.21 in prelims). Lambkin finished seventh in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:10.77, 1:10.33 in prelims) and Simon ended eighth in the 100-yard butterfly (1:00.47).

Cortland also recorded seven scoring finishes between 10th and 16th place. Junior Emily McGurk (Monroe/Monroe-Woodbury) placed 10th in the 100-yard butterfly (1:01.34) and sophomore Kathleen Gallagher (Pearl River) was 10th in the 400-yard individual medley (5:06.96). Johnson earned 11th-place finishes in both the 100-yard butterfly (1:01.38, 1:01.34 in prelims) and the 100-yard backstroke (1:02.59, 1:02.18 in prelims). Senior Chloe Freideman (Whitney Point) finished 11th in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:12.11). Senior Ally Baraban (Melville/Half Hollow Hills East) turned in a 14th-place finish in the 400-yard individual medley (5:11.56) and junior Whitney Mietz (Rochester/Brighton) was 16th in the 100-yard butterfly (1:04.15, 1:03.18 in prelims).

The competition will conclude Saturday with prelims at 10 a.m. and finals at 5:30 p.m.
