Jack Jakubek (Monroe/Monroe-Woodbury) broke an 18-year-old school record in the 200-yard breaststroke to highlight Cortland's performances during the final day of the 2016 SUNYAC Men's Swimming and Diving Championship. The event was held at Erie Community College's Burt Flickinger Center.
Cortland finished fourth in the final team standings. Geneseo won its third straight league title with 977 points. New Paltz finished second (526), followed by Fredonia (454), Cortland (414), Oneonta (355), Oswego (268), Buffalo St. (244), Potsdam (187) and Brockport (166).
Jakubek finished second in the 200-yard breaststroke finals in 2:06.42, eclipsing the previous school mark of 2:06.71 set by Kevin Crossman in 1998. Jakubek earned second team All-SUNYAC honors with his runner-up finishes in the 100-yard and 200-yard breaststroke races during the meet. Individual champions at the meet earn first-team All-SUNYAC honors. Second-place and third-place individual finishers are awarded second-team all-league status.
Reeve Callen (Oswego) notched his third individual runner-up showing in as many days with a second-place time of 45.62 seconds in the 100-yard freestyle. He had previously finished second in the 50-yard and 200-yard freestyle events. The 400-yard freestyle relay team of
Dylan Burns (Cornwall),
Tim Thatcher (Staten Island/St. Peter's Boys),
Brian Cremer (Blue Point/Bayport-Blue Point) and Callen finished third in 3:08.24.
Mathew Hasbrouck (New Paltz) finished fifth in the 200-yard butterfly (1:57.17, 1:56.24 in prelims) and Burns was seventh in the 100-yard freestyle (46.81). Other Red Dragons scoring points on the final day were:
Adam Kirchgessner (Irondequoit/West Irondequoit) in the 200-yard butterfly (10th place, 1:58.79); Thatcher in the 1,650-yard freestyle (11th place, 17:28.08), and
Parker Roberts (Panama) in the 1,650-yard freestyle (13th place, 17:43.04).
