BUFFALO, N.Y. – Cortland senior
Miranda Fergus (Millbrook) earned Women's Diver of the Meet honors as the Red Dragons finished in third place out of nine schools at the 2016 SUNYAC Women's Swimming and Diving Championships. The three-day event was held at Erie Community College's Burt Flickinger Center.
Geneseo won its ninth straight league crown with 964 points, followed by New Paltz (681), Cortland (438) and Oneonta (356.5) in the top four. Rounding out the field were Fredonia (294), Oswego (250.5), Brockport (199), Buffalo St. (186) and Potsdam (161). Cortland has finished in the top three in the conference 10 of the last 13 years.
Fergus finished second in 3-meter diving Saturday with a score of 470.65 points after winning the 1-meter competition two days earlier. She scored the most points combined on the two boards to earn the Diver of the Meet honor. Fergus will be competing at the NCAA Div. III Region 4 Diving Championships at Cortland (Feb. 26 at 2 p.m. and Feb. 27 at noon) and will look to advance to nationals for the second time in her career.
The 400-yard freestyle relay team of
Elizabeth Connolly (Lockport),
Angelica Ford (Elk Grove Village, IL),
Emily McGurk (Monroe/Monroe-Woodbury) and
Amanda Grossman (Schaghticoke/Hoosic Valley) finished in third place in 3:38.90. Connolly placed fourth in the 100-yard freestyle (54.00) and Ford was fifth in the 200-yard backstroke (2:09.77, 2:09.42 in prelims).
Kelly Lambkin (Monroe/Monroe-Woodbury) turned in a sixth-place showing in the 200-yard breaststroke (2:33.58), while
Chelsey Simon (Oneida) was sixth in the 200-yard butterfly (2:15.43, 2:13.49 in prelims).
Jackie Bors (Buffalo/North Tonawanda) and
Jacqueline Lang (Middletown/Pine Bush) finished eighth (305.70 points, 345.25 prelims) and 10th (302.55 points), respectively, in 3-meter diving.
Natalie Johnson (Canandaigua/Marcus Whitman) won the "B" final in the 200-yard backstroke (2:15.05) for a ninth-place overall finish.
Brianne Munch (East Lyme, CT) was 11th (19:13.21) and
Halle King (Auburn/Skaneateles) finished 15th (19:38.49) in the 1,650-yard freestyle.
Chloe Freideman (Whitney Point) finished 11th in the 200-yard breaststroke (2:37.17), with
Kathleen Gallagher (Pearl River) 16th in the event (2:41.68). McGurk finished 11th in the 200-yard butterfly (2:18.28, 2:17.98 in prelims), Grossman was 13th in the 100-yard freestyle (54.67), and
Ally Baraban (Melville/Half Hollow Hills East) placed 14th in the 200-yard backstroke (2:23.93, 2:22.70 in prelims).
