Miranda Fergus dives during Day 1 of the NCAA Regionals in Cortland. Fergus finished second on the 1-meter board and is guaranteed a spot at nationals.
CORTLAND, N.Y. – Cortland senior diver
Miranda Fergus (Pleasantville/Millbrook) clinched a berth to the NCAA Division III Women's Swimming and Diving Championships with her second-place finish on the 1-meter board during the opening day of competition at the NCAA Region 4 Diving Championships. Cortland is hosting the two-day competition at Holsten Pool.
Fergus, making her fourth straight regional appearance, finished second out of 26 competitors with a score of 436.85 points. She was leading with one dive remaining in the 11-dive competition before being caught by RIT's Natalie Snyder, who finished first at 450.30 points.
Brockport's Meghann Kilgallon placed third at 424.35 points and Katie Helly of Ithaca was fourth at 423.80 points. Those four divers are guaranteed national berths regardless of Saturday's 3-meter competition. Seven total divers will advance to nationals, where they will be able to participate on both boards. The national qualifiers are chosen by taking the 1-meter winner, then the 3-meter winner, then the 1-meter runner-up, and so on, with divers already invited being skipped for the next finisher on that board.
Fergus will be making her second NCAA national appearance. She advanced to nationals as a sophomore and earned honorable mention All-America honors with a 13th-place national finish on the 1-meter board.
The women's 3-meter regional event will start Saturday at 12 p.m., followed by the men's 1-meter board at approximately 3:30 p.m.
