Koelbel Wins Pentathlon, Hits Two of Cortland's Five ECAC Marks, at Ithaca Invite

Valerie Moise was part of Cortland's 4x200-meter relay team that finished in second place
ITHACA, N.Y. – Cortland registered five ECAC-qualifying performances, including two by Kayla Koelbel (Bradford, PA/Kings Park (NY)) as part of her winning pentathlon, at the Ithaca College Bomber Invitational and Multi.
 
Koelbel finished first in a field of 19 competitors and currently ranks seventh nationally in Div. III with her score of 3,246 points. She recorded ECAC efforts in two of the five events with a 60-meter hurdles time of 9.13 seconds for 883 points and a high jump of 1.59 meters (5' 2.5") for 724 points.
 
Kailyn Balzano (East Greenbush/Columbia) finished second of 41 in the 800 meters with an ECAC time of 2:16.98 that ranks 19th nationally. Kayla Blomback (Orchard Park) was fifth in the 800 meters in 2:21.70, also an ECAC mark. The 4x200-meter relay team of Midge Moore (Massapequa), Dana Kupiec (Salem), Valerie Moise (Central Islip) and Raheemah Madany (Bennington, VT/Mount Anthony Union) also notched an ECAC time with their second-place effort of 1:43.72.
 
Allison Schumann (North Salem) finished second of 24 in the 5,000 meters (18:54.85) and Nicole Hofmann (Farmingdale) was fifth in the pentathlon (2,720 points). Brenda Perrella (Hamburg/Frontier) finished fifth of 49 in the shot put (11.61 meters – 38' 1.25") and sixth of 46 in the weight throw (14.30 meters – 46' 11"), with Diamond Jackson (Farmingville/Sachem East) eighth in the shot put (11.14 meters – 36' 6.75").
 
Gabriella Czerw (Holbrook/Sachem North) placed sixth in the high jump. Her best height of 1.55 meters (5' 1") was tied for the second-best at the meet, but she finished sixth due to number of misses. Kaylee Uhl (Waverly) was sixth of 38 in the 800 meters (2:24.29), Hannah Anthes (Liverpool) finished sixth of 32 in the 400-meter dash (1:02.41), and Kerri Culhane (Sayville) placed sixth of 38 in the mile run (5:19.96).
 
Three Red Dragons earned top-10 pole vault finishes, all by clearing 3.05 meters (10' 0"). Jane Martinez (East Lyme, CT) tied for sixth out of 24, Emily Taylor (Huntington/John H. Glenn) finished eighth, and Alex Seymour (Dryden) tied for ninth, with number of misses determining their placements. Moore finished 10th out of 92 competitors in the 200-meter dash in 26.63 seconds.
 
Two different Cortland 4x400-meter relay units finished in the top 10 out of 20 teams. Yasmeen Griffin (Liverpool), Anthes, Uhl and Balzano finished fifth (4:12.59), while Dana Messina (East Meadow), Madison Herbert (Kings Park), Blomback and Jennifer Jelic (Oneonta) ended in ninth place (4:22.64).
 
Cortland will send competitors to the Boston University Valentine Invitational on Friday-Saturday, Feb. 12-13, and to the Cornell Sunday Invitational on Feb. 14.
