Jack Flood (Bayport/Bayport-Blue Point) currently sits in second place in the heptathlon, with junior
Connor Christopherson (Morrisonville/Saranac) in eighth and freshman Brent DiVitorrio (Brewster) in 10th, after Day 1 of the NCAA Division III Men's Indoor Track and Field Championships. The two-day event is being hosted by Grinnell College.
Flood has scored 2,804 points through four events, 88 behind leader Ethan Schoen of Wisconsin-Stout. Christopherson has totaled 2,655 points and DiVittorio has 2,604 points. The athletes competed in the 60-meter dash, long jump, shot put and high jump Friday, with the 60-meter hurdles, pole vault and 1,000-meter run remaining Saturday. The top eight finishers will earn All-America honors.
Flood was 15th of 15 after posting a time of 7.58 seconds in the 60-meter dash, but tied for second in the long jump at 6.62 meters (21' 8.75") to score 725 points and had the third-best shot put at 12.31 meters (40' 4.75") for 625 points. Flood then tied Schoen for first in the high jump at 1.96 meters (6' 5") for his best score of the day at 767 points.
Christopherson tied for seventh in the 60-meter dash (7.35) for 762 points and tied for 10th in the long jump at 6.15 meters (20' 2.25") for 619 points. He tallied 613 points in the shot put, sixth best in the field, at 12.11 meters (39' 8.75") and finished tied for seventh in the high jump at 1.84 meters (6' 0.5") for 661 points.
DiVittorio opened strong with the second-best 60-meter dash time at 7.22 seconds for 806 points. He followed that with 617 points in the long jump (6.14 meters/20' 1.75") and 441 points in the shot put (9.25 meters/30' 4.25"), and ended with a solid third-place score of 740 points in the high jump (1.93 meters/6' 4").
In addition to the completion of the heptathlon, Cortland will also field competitors Saturday in two field event finals.
Dawan Jones (Buffalo/Tapestry Charter) will enter as the third seed in the triple jump and
Nick Vachon (Johnson City/Maine-Endwell) is the eighth seed in the high jump.
