Cortland Splits Doubleheader at Fredonia; Win Streak Snapped at 11

FREDONIA, N.Y. - Cortland scored 15 straight runs to erase a 6-3 deficit as the Red Dragons defeated host Fredonia, 18-6, in the opening game of a SUNYAC doubleheader. Fredonia rebounded to win the second game, 7-5, to snap Cortland's 11-game winning streak and hand the Red Dragons their first league loss.

Cortland (18-4, 7-1 SUNYAC) will play at Oswego, coached by former Red Dragon All-American and assistant coach Abby Martin, in a doubleheader Saturday at noon.

Cortland 18, Fredonia 6

Cortland pounded out 14 hits, including four home runs, in the Game 1 victory. Diane Cork (Wayland/Wayland-Cohocton), who homered in each game of the twinbill, hit a two-run shot in the first. Stephanie Tirone (Amherst/Williamsville South) and Kaleigh Churchill (Camillus/West Genesee) hit solo homers to lead off the fourth and fifth innings, respectively, and Erin Wolstenholme (Oneonta) hit a grand slam during Cortland's six-run seventh.

Jamie Bucci (Tarrytown/Sleepy Hollow) went 3-for-4 with a walk, three RBI and a run scored and Mikayla Shade (Bethlehem) was 2-for-3 with two walks, an RBI and three runs. Andrea Schoonmaker (Marlboro) was 1-for-1 with a triple, two walks, sac fly, three RBI and two runs.

Sam Van Dorn (Medford/Patchogue-Medford) entered to pitch to start the bottom of the third with Cortland down 6-3 and earned the win with five innings of three-hit, shutout ball. She struck out one and walked one, and she is now 3-0 on the season.

Fredonia was led offensively by Madeline Medina, who went 2-for-4 with a double and three RBI. Cassidy Herman was 2-for-3 and Nikki Lent drove in two runs and scored twice.

Cortland led 3-0 in the first on Cork's two-run homer and a Schoonmaker sac fly. Fredonia quickly got two runs back in the bottom of the inning, the first on a Medina RBI double and the second after a throw following a Lindsey Forness single. The Blue Devils grabbed the lead with four runs in the second on a Lent two-run double and Medina two-run single.

Tirone's round-tripper in the fourth cut the deficit to 6-4, and Churchill's homer started a three-run fifth. Tirone drove in the tying run with a fielder's choice grounder, and the go-ahead run scored on the play after an error.

The Red Dragons pushed their lead to 12-6 in the sixth with five runs courtesy of a Shade RBI single, a Schoonmaker two-run triple and a Bucci two-run single. Wolstenholme's grand slam in the seventh was followed later in the inning by a Bucci RBI on a one-out error and a Chelsea Palma (Holbrook/Sachem North) pinch-hit RBI single.

Fredonia 7, Cortland 5

Fredonia (6-10, 2-2 SUNYAC) led 5-1 after two innings and held off another Cortland comeback bid to earn the split. The Blue Devils used the long ball to score three times in the first. Kelly Losito hit a solo homer with one out and Katelyn Dennis hit a two-run homer three batters later.

The Red Dragons got a run back in the second on a Wolstenholme RBI single, but Fredonia answered with two runs in the bottom of the inning on back-to-back, two-out RBI singles from Losito and Alyssa Morgan.

Cork led off the top of the fifth with a solo homer, followed by singles from Niki Barbato (East Meadow/Holy Trinity) and Skyler Hoyt (Endicott/Union-Endicott) and a Schoonmaker walk to load the bases. After a fielder's choice for the first out, Carrie Stoddard (Liverpool) hit a two-run single to left to draw the Red Dragons within 5-4. At that point, Aldyn Carlson entered in relief of starter Emily Shellenberger with runners on first and second and induced an inning-ending double play grounder.

Fredonia rang up two key insurance runs in the bottom of the sixth. Leanne Villani singled, was bunt to second by Losito, went to third on a Morgan single and scored on a wild pitch. With two outs, Kim Lotocki singled to drive in Morgan and put the Blue Devils up 7-4.

In the top of the seventh, Hoyt walked with one out and Wolstenholme hit a two-out single. With runners on second and third, a wild pitch allowed Hoyt to score, but Carlson closed out the game by getting the next batter to ground out.

Shellenberger earned the win despite allowing four runs on eight hits and four walks in a four and a third innings. She struck out three. Carlson notched her third save of the season with one run allowed over two and two thirds innings. She gave up one hit and walked two. Jamie Lachall (Philadephia, PA/Sun Valley) took the loss with six runs allowed, five earned, over five innings.

Morgan went 3-for-4 with an RBI, Losito was 2-for-3 with two RBI and two runs, and Lotocki and Herman each went 2-for-4 as part of Fredonia's 14-hit attack.

For Cortland, Hoyt reached safely in all four of her plate appearances with two hits and two walks. She scored three times. Stoddard finished 2-for-4 with two RBI, Wolstenholme was 2-for-4 with an RBI and Barbato finished 2-for-4. Barbato extended her hitting streak to 12 games, the best by a Red Dragon this spring, with her hits in each game, while Cork has now reached base safely (via hit, walk or hit-by-pitch) in 20 straight games.
