MAHWAH, N.J. - The Cortland men's outdoor track and field team, behind the strength of first-place finishes in six individual events and one relay, captured the team title at the two-day Ramapo College Roadrunner Invitational.
Cortland's 146 points more than doubled the second-place finisher in a field of 31 teams that scored. Ramapo placed second with 71 points, followed by New Jersey Institute of Technology (67), Suffolk Community College (60.5) and Manhattan (49) in the top five.
Mitch Couch (Oneonta) set school and meet records in the hammer throw with his winning distance of 56.60 meters (185' 8"). The previous school record was 52.27 meters (171' 6") set by Tyler Prendergast in 2013. Couch also won the shot put at 14.89 meters (48' 10.25") and was second in the discus at 47.82 meters (156' 11"). All three of Couch's efforts are ECAC qualifiers.
Storm Malone (Harrison/Highland) won the 110-meter hurdles with an ECAC-qualifying time of 14.83 seconds.
Charlie Kollmer (Mount Sinai) was the top collegiate finisher, and second overall, in the pole vault at 4.60 meters (15' 1"), also an ECAC qualifier.
Cortland's other individual winners were
Mitch Ryan (Plattsburgh/Seton Catholic) in the 1,500 meters (4:00.61) and
Jesse Perrone (East Syracuse/East Syracuse Minoa) in the 5,000 meters (15:42.07). The Red Dragons also were victorious in the 4x100-meter relay as
Jerel Williams (East Islip),
Romain Saint Germain (Westbury),
Zach Meszler (Altamont/Herkimer) and
Alec Swider (Glenville/Scotia-Glenville) finished with an ECAC-qualifying time of 42.53 seconds.
Jack Flood (Blue Point/Bayport-Blue Point) recorded two of Cortland's other four ECAC-qualifying efforts at the meet. He was third in the high jump at 1.95 meters (6' 4.75"), and he was sixth in the 110-meter hurdle prelims in 15.35 seconds but did not compete in the finals.
Dawan Jones (Buffalo/Tapestry Charter) finished second in the triple jump with an ECAC distance of 13.76 meters (45' 1.75"), and
Connor Christopherson (Morrisonville/Saranac) finished sixth in the 110-meter hurdles in 16.10 seconds after recording an ECAC time of 15.26 seconds in prelims.
Jake Zedack (Mexico) and
Sam Morrett (Cohoes) finished second (10:05.29) and third (10:32.96), respectively, in the 3,000-meter steeplechase.
Jarred Iacovelli (Manahawkin, NJ/Southern Regional) finished fourth in the 1,500 meters (4:06.46), with
Aaron Granger (Delvan/Pioneer) in fifth place (4:09.25).
Cortland's 4x400-meter relay team of
Richard Taylor (Westbury),
Austen Johnson (Jamestown),
John Nitterour (Big Flats/Horseheads) and Williams finished in third place (3:24.33).
Tyler Hochadel (Hamburg/Frontier) was the fifth-best collegian, and sixth overall, in the shot put at 13.86 meters (45' 5.75").
Nick Vachon (Johnson City/Maine-Endwell) tied for fifth place in the high jump by clearing 1.90 meters (6' 2.75"). Saint Germain was fourth in prelims in the 100-meter dash in 11.36 seconds, but did not compete in the finals.
Meszler placed sixth among collegiate entries, and seventh overall, in the 100-meter dash in 1128 seconds (11.22 in prelims), and he was eighth in the 200-meter dash (23.14). Nitterour finished sixth in the 400-meter dash (50.64) and
Dante Binotto III (Canajoharie) was sixth among collegiate scorers and seventh overall in the hammer throw at 43.88 meters (143' 11").
Also for the Red Dragons, Johnson finished seventh in the 400-meter hurdles (57.46),
Matt Greenlaw (Warwick/Warwick Valley) tied for seventh among collegians (tied for eighth overall) in the pole vault (4.00 meters - 13' 1.5"), and
C.J. White (Middletown) finished eighth in the triple jump (13.03 meters - 42' 9").
Cortland will send competitors to the Princeton University Sam Howell Invitational next Friday and to the Cornell Invitational next Saturday.
