Jack Flood (Blue Point/Bayport-Blue Point) has been honored by both the State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) and the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) for his school record-setting decathlon performance.
Flood is the SUNYAC Men's Field Athlete of the Week and the ECAC Division III Metro/Upstate New York Co-Men's Track and Field Athlete of the Week for the week ending April 17. He shared the ECAC award with RPI's Tyler Yeastedt.
Flood beat 27 other competitors in the decathlon at the Kutztown University Mondshein Multi event last Thursday and Friday. His score of 6,618 points broke the previous school record of 6,590 points set by Steven Armstrong in 1980. Flood currently ranks first nationally in Division III with his performance.
During the decathlon, Flood met ECAC qualifying standards in both the high jump at 2.04 meters (6' 8.25") and the 110-meter hurdles at 15.15 seconds. He is presently ranked ninth nationally in the high jump. Some of his other top efforts at Kutztown included a 100-meter dash time of 11.71 seconds, a 1,500-meter run time of 4:38.08, and a 400-meter dash time of 53.40 seconds. In all, Flood scored more than 600 points in eight of 10 events.
Cortland has moved from sixth to fourth place in the latest United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) Division III Men's Outdoor Track and Field national rankings. The Red Dragons will send competitors to the Princeton Larry Ellis Invitational on Friday and the Cornell Upstate Challenge on Saturday.
