Cortland Extends SUNYAC Lead With Pair of Six-Inning Wins vs. Plattsburgh

CORTLAND, N.Y. - Jamie Lachall (Philadelphia, PA/Sun Valley) threw a three-hitter in the opener and Alexandrea Flint (Dalton/Keshequa) and Sam Van Dorn (Medford/Patchogue-Medford) combined on a one-hit shutout in the second game as Cortland swept Plattsburgh, 11-3 and 8-0, in a SUNYAC doubleheader.

Both games were called in the bottom of the sixth after Cortland scored to create eight-run margins. Niki Barbato (East Meadow/Holy Trinity) went 3-for-4 with a three-run homer and three runs scored in the second game.

The Red Dragons (22-8 overall) improved their SUNYAC-leading record to 11-1, three games better than second-place Oneonta (8-4). Plattsburgh fell to 18-12 overall and 6-4 in the conference. Cortland will host Potsdam for a doubleheader Saturday at noon.

Cortland 11, Plattsburgh 3 (6 inn.)

Cortland spotted Plattsburgh two runs in the top of the first without the benefit of a hit thanks to two errors, but the Red Dragons responded with four runs in the bottom of the first and never trailed from that point. Plattsburgh was still within 4-3 before Cortland broke the game open with six in the fifth, and the Red Dragons scored in the sixth to end the game by the eight-run rule.

Lachall allowed three hits and three runs, one earned, in six innings and is now 7-5. She struck out one and walked none. Morgan Anderson gave up nine runs on eight hits and five walks in five and a third innings for the Cardinals.

Plattsburgh started the game with a Cortland error, a sac bunt, and two hit batters to load the bases with one out. Kelsey Gage hit into a fielder's choice, with everyone safe due to an error, to drive in a run, and Amy Glashoff's groundout to second plated a run. Lachall got a groundout to escape further damage.

Cortland sent nine batters to the plate in the bottom of the first. Jamie Bucci (Tarrytown/Sleepy Hollow) and Diane Cork (Wayland/Wayland-Cohocton) each walked and Barbato doubled to left to drive in a run. Kaleigh Churchill (Camillus/West Genesee) followed with an RBI single to drive in Cork, and Barbato scored on the play when Plattsburgh tried to throw out Churchill at second as she advanced on the throw home from the outfield. Andrea Schoonmaker (Marlboro) hit an RBI single to first two batters later to put Cortland up 4-0.

The Cardinals scored their final run in the second. Samantha Railey singled and took second on a wild pitch. She moved to third on a groundout and scored on a Kaitlyn Preiss RBI groundout.

The game remained 4-3 until Cortland's six-run fifth. Highlights during the inning included a Schoonmaker RBI double, an Erin Wolstenholme (Oneonta) two-run double, a pinch-hit RBI single by Carrie Stoddard (Liverpool), and bases-loaded walks by Cork and Churchill. The walk by Cork was the 82nd of her career, tying the school record set by Lucia Meola from 2010-13. The Red Dragons ended the game in the sixth on Skyler Hoyt's (Endicott/Union-Endicott) pinch-hit, walkoff RBI single.

Churchill finished 2-for-3 with a walk, two RBI and two runs and Schoonmaker was 2-for-4 with a double and two RBI. Wolstenholme doubled and walked twice in four trips to the plate and drove in two runs, whle Bucci went 1-for-2 with a walk and two runs scored.

Cortland 8, Plattsburgh 0 (6 inn.)

Flint, now 10-2, retired the first 10 batters she faced before allowing a one-out double by Amanda Tantillo in the fourth for the Cardinals' lone hit. Flint mowed down the last five batters she saw, and Van Dorn recorded a 1-2-3 top of the sixth. Flint finished with two strikeouts and one walk and Van Dorn fanned one batter.

Katie Pitkin, a member of Cortland's team last year, fell to 11-6 with the loss for Plattsburgh. She gave up nine hits and eight runs, five earned, with five walks in a five and two thirds innings. She struck out two hitters.

Cortland grabbed a 2-0 lead in the second on Stephanie Tirone's (Amherst/Williamsville South) bases-loaded walk and Bucci's RBI infield single. In the third, Barbato led off with a single, went all the way to third on a Churchill sac bunt, and scored on Stoddard's double down the left field line.

Barbato also started a rally in the fifth when she led off with a single, was bunted to both second and third, and scored on a wild pitch. Cortland closed out the game in the sixth. Bucci beat out a grounder to short, Cork reached on an error, and Barbato hit a three-run homer to left. Later in the inning, Hannah Feldman (Amherst/Sweet Home) walked and eventually scored on a wild pitch with the bases loaded.

In addition to Barbato's three hits, Churchill finished 2-for-2 and was a combined 4-for-5 with a walk in the doubleheader.
