Cortland Splits Non-League Doubleheader vs. Visiting Rochester

CORTLAND, N.Y. - The Cortland softball team split a non-league doubleheader with visiting Rochester, winning the first game in five innings, 9-1, before being shut out in the second contest, 6-0. The Red Dragons are now 25-9 and will host Nazareth in another non-league doubleheader Tuesday at 3 p.m.

Cortland 9, Rochester 1 (5 inn.)

Jamie Lachall (Philadelphia, PA/Sun Valley) threw a four-hitter and Cortland's top three hitters in the lineup went a combined 7-for-9 with seven RBI and six runs scored in the contest, which was called due to the eight rule after the Red Dragons scored their final run in the bottom of the fifth.

Lachall allowed one unearned run, struck out three and did not walk anyone to improve to 9-5. She threw only 55 pitches, 44 for strikes. Eleni Wechsler fell to 10-14 with the loss after permitting eight hits and eight runs, six earned, in three and a third innings.

Jamie Bucci (Tarrytown/Sleepy Hollow) finished 3-for-3 with a walk, two RBI, three runs and two steals. Her 49 career steals are tied for second in school history with Jamie Neuner (2005-07), with Donnalyn Cross first with 70 steals from 2008-11. Diane Cork (Wayland/Wayland-Cohocton) finished 2-for-3 with a three-run homer and three runs scored, while Niki Barbato (East Meadow/Holy Trinity) went 2-for-3 with a two-run double.

Rochester took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first on a Mackenzie Cronin RBI single. Barbato hit her two-run double in the bottom of the first to put Cortland ahead 2-1. In the third, Bucci singled, stole second, went to third on a passed ball and scored when Cork reached on an error. Two batters later, with Cork on third, Kaleigh Churchill (Camillus/West Genesee) hit a pop-up into short right field. Rochester second baseman Laurelle Byrne-Cody made a nice running catch, but Cork was able to tag up and score on the short sacrifice fly.

The Red Dragons broke the game open in the fourth. The inning started with singles by Erin Wolstenholme (Oneonta), who finished 2-for-3, and Skyler Hoyt (Endicott/Union-Endicott). Pinch runner Alissa De Padua (Milford, PA/Delaware Valley) went to third on Hoyt's hit, with Hoyt taking second on the throw. Bucci singled with one out to drive in De Padua, and Cork followed with a three-run blast to left for her fifth homer of the season and the 30th of her career, one shy of tying the school record. Cortland ended the game in the sixth on Bucci's walk-off RBI single to left.

Rochester 6, Cortland 0

Rochester starter Elizabeth Bourne, making only her fourth collegiate start, tossed a two-hit shutout to give the Yellowjackets (20-20) the split. She walked two and struck out one. Alexandrea Flint (Dalton/Keshequa), now 11-3, allowed six hits in two innings, including five in a four-run second frame. Sam Van Dorn (Medford/Patchogue-Medford) did not allow a run over the next four innings before surrendering two runs in the seventh.

Rochester's four-run second started with singles by Cronin and Rachael Pletz. Logan Mohr doubled with one out to drive in Cronin, and Bourne helped her own cause with a two-run double to right center. Kayla Kibling's single put runners on first and third and Shelby Corning's fielder's choice grounder scored a run as Bourne beat home the throw from the second baseman.

The Yellowjackets added two in the seventh on infield singles by Kibling and Corning, a Jocelynn Blackshear walk, and two outs later, a two-run single by Pletz.

Five Rochester players recorded two hits apiece as part of an 11-hit showing. Bourne was 2-for-3 with two doubles and two RBI. Kibling went 2-for-3 with a walk, Pletz was 2-for-4 with two RBI, Corning finished 2-for-4 with an RBI, and Cronin ended 2-for-4.

Cortland's two hits were a two-out single by Andrea Schoonmaker (Marlboro) in thesecond and a one-out double by Mikayla Shade (Bethlehem) in the fourth. Those two batters were the only two to reach second base for the Red Dragons.
